Survey Reveals the Best and Worst Aspects of being a Teacher

It appears that pupils are at the heart of what teachers best like about their job. In our UKEdChat survey, teachers were asked to list the best and worst aspects of their roles in the education system. Pressure, workload, government interference, paperwork and an imbalance of work and life priorities were among the greatest gripes.

Early Years and Primary teachers loved seeing lightbulb moments in their pupils feeling that their jobs were very rewarding, creating a feeling of making a difference to pupils lives. Teachers at secondary, further and higher education enjoyed really being able to specialise in their subject, with their enthusiasm shining through in their teaching. Students, again, were at the heart of the vocation. The length of holidays were also seen as a huge benefit to the job – a perk truly valued by a majority.

Politics, both internal and external, proved to be an issue to educators as a lack of respect for the role has increased in recent times, plus various colleagues who appear to be coasting – not applying themselves – letting their students, colleagues and the education system down. Marking, working in the evening and at weekends was also highlighted as a major drawback to the job.

The main response to the survey showed how committed to their students teachers are, but the constant pressure and negative interference from governments and inspection agencies interferes with a job most are proud of.
