Activity: Book Giving Day – February 14

wpid-Photo-22-Jan-2014-1831.jpgInternational Book Giving Day is a day dedicated to getting new, used and borrowed book in the hands of as many children as possible, with the event proving a great idea for schools. The event this year is planned for Friday 14th February.

The scheme is a volunteer initiative with the aim at increasing children’s access to enthusiasm for books – in the UK one-third of children do not own books, whereas in the USA two-thirds of children living in poverty do no own books.

The initiative encourages three ways to get involved:

  1. Give a book to a friend or family member – This could be developed in schools where older pupils give their ‘old’ books to younger pupils; secondary schools could partner up with local primary schools giving books etc.
  2. Leave a book in a waiting room.
  3. Donate a gently used book to a local library, hospital or organisation that distributes books to children in need internationally. Details on such organisations is available here.

See the website for more details, and get involved with this great initiative to encourage more children to read and enjoy books.
