At a recent Apple training event I was told that there is no ‘silver bullet’ app for iPads in education, but if there were one it would be Explain Everything. It is a fantastic app which can be used in so many different ways. It is a great way for students to consolidate their findings into one place using a variety of media and can be a fantastic modelling tool for teachers. This post will focus on the latter.

It is a great way for students to consolidate their findings into one place using a variety of media and can be a fantastic modelling tool for teachers. This post will focus on the latter.
In the video below I have modelled grid multiplication by recording and writing at the same time. The result is a simple, easy to follow the model which can be accessed by children at school or at home. In this example, I have done the modelling, but there is no reason why it could not be a child who has secured the method.
There are so many things you could model with this, in writing this would be a great way model sentence types, in reading you could highlight relevant parts of a comprehension and so on…
Beyond modelling Explain Everything can also be used for assessment, especially for learners who find it difficult to process written feedback. Simply take a picture of a piece of work and talk through your thoughts on it. Valuable, real-time feedback which the learner can take with them and watch as many times as they need to.
It may not be the silver bullet, but there is an awful lot you can do with it.
