EduApp: Ulysses Writing App for iPad

Premium Writing App arrives on iPad

Ulysses-iOS-120x120If you, or your students, write a lot, then finding the best tools to help the process is essential. Whether presentation is your focus, or the content of your writing, selecting the means can be critical.

Whether you’re a novelist, a journalist, a student or a blogger – if you love to write and write a lot, Ulysses gives you a uniquely streamlined toolset, covering every phase of the writing process:

– A powerful, yet simple text editor.
– A familiar, no-nonsense text library.
– A comprehensive and truly flexible multi-format export.

Ulysses is said to have the best text editor in the world, and we didn’t believe this, as it’s quite a status to behold. However, the app offers everything you need – from markup to images and footnotes, from links to comments and code –, and it still manages to stay out of the way. It’s a beautiful and focused experience, which turns writing on mobile into *actual fun*.

Its unified library offers unprecedented access to everything you’ll ever write, be it snippets and ideas, be it blog posts or manuscripts. Every text is at your fingertips, literally, and Ulysses perfectly scales from scratchpad to diary to Great American Novels – and to everything in-between.

For us though, what sets this app apart from others, is the exporting. Ulysses can transform your text into beautiful PDFs (these are truly stunning), web pages, standard e-books and Rich Text documents. You can copy as HTML or save to the cloud as Markdown. Export is as easy as tapping a format, selecting a style, and chosing a destination. Yes, 1-2-3. No need to leave the app.

Best of all, Ulysses offers fully-fledged, no-holds-barred, all-out iCloud sync, being available for both Mac and iPad, and every connected device has access to everything and anything you’ll ever write. Synchronization is simple, seamless and neither requires third-party apps, nor any kind of interaction.

IMG_1959This is a pricey app -there is no denying that – and some students or educators will think this is beyond their means. But if you seriously like your iPad, like writing, and want a really clever app to help you develop your writing, this is an app worthy of investment.

We used the app with a bluetooth keyboard, and the useful tools remain at the foot of the screen, including a word count, justification tools, formatting tools, and the tools to attach images or video. We really think that the exporting options are also a major strength of the app, as you can export as stunning PDF documents, ePub, HTML, plain text, or RTF.

Ulysses for iPad is currently priced £14.99, and available from the Apple App Store by Clicking Here, or the icon below..
