Session 275: Gender Issues in Education

Questions posed by Tim Oates

1: Subject choice is heavily ‘gendered’ after GCSEs – how far should schools go with what young people opt for and how far should stereotypical choices be challenged?

2: Are male role models important in primary? Are female role models important in stereotypically male subjects in secondary? What do we need to do in teacher training?

3: What do you see as the key points at which divergences in the attainment of boys and girls kick in?

4: Its not just schools which have ‘gendered’ routes – the labour market has heavily gendered participation – what can employers do to send the right signals back into schools?

5: How far do issues of gender come up your scale of priorities?
