In the last couple of years, our faculty has worked extremely hard to encourage students to “talk like an essay”. Two very simple ideas that have worked a treat are:
- A synonym display – can be used to prompt students to vary their vocabulary both during discussions & whole-class feedback. It can be also be used to great effect during ‘live’ modelling or co-constructing writing.
- Pre-teaching vocabulary – Simple starter activities with new words, images and examples which students then explain back to their peers and use during the lesson increases their understanding and retention of new vocabulary.
