I was struggling to find a way to enable my class to independently edit, until I explored Editing Stations – an idea I initially saw on Facebook. It involves training the children to focus on features in the text type that they have been exploring. If you had been teaching explanation texts you might have one station focusing on causal conjunctions and one station focusing on passive verbs etc. I always include one station on punctuation and one station on up-levelling vocabulary/proofread spelling along with three others.
When I first introduced this approach I had prompt cards on each table. The children spent 10 minutes on each station and physically moved from table to table. The cards told the children what they needed to do and how to add examples of the features they had missed. Each time we subsequently used the editing stations, I took away some prompts.
We are now into Term Two and the children don’t need prompt cards. I display the name of the stations to focus on and they move between each of the stations at their own pace – without leaving their seat. By the end of this term the children will be editing independently.
