Conflict happens in schools for various reasons, and finding ways to manage conflict is essential for everyone in education, ideally by preventing it from happening in the first place. Managing conflict isn’t necessarily about forgiving and forgetting past transgressions, and insisting that the quarrelers ‘shake hands and make up’ dismisses and belittles their genuine grievances with the other person or group, which can cause resentment. Yet a way to de-escalate conflict needs to be found.
