The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in a lot of stress. For young people, the lack of social interaction with friends and family, as well as anxiety about what impact disruption may have on their education and future prospects. Although anxieties, stresses and feeling worried about the situation are natural emotions, many young people may not be aware of strategies that can help reduce any distress.

Psychologists have shown that individuals who take stock of their emotions – be they sadness, anxiety, fear, loneliness etc – and address their emotions with mindful actions, report lower stress levels than those who steer away from identifying with their emotions or do not gauge the potential effects of their behaviour (see the research report by clicking here).

For this #UKEdChat session, we will explore how accentuated situations, like the pandemic, can have an impact of pupils.

  1. How would you describe the general current emotional well-being and mental health of your pupils?
  2. What does a lack of focus on the well-being of pupils potentially look like in schools?
  3. How does your school monitor the well-being of pupils?
  4. How can schools actively improve the well-being and mental health of pupils?
  5. What are your biggest concerns for the well-being and mental health of your pupils?
  6. What further training would you like to better support the well-being and mental health of pupils?
  7. What are your favourite activities, methods and interventions to improve the well-being and mental health of pupils?
  8. What changes would you like to make in your own classroom to improve the well-being and mental health of your pupils?
