Ensuring that a lesson is bespoke for each and every student is the holy grail of teaching. Yet differentiation it is extremely challenging to do well, and real-time assessment and adaption of a lesson is a key skill which experienced teachers learn over a teaching lifetime.

Being conscious of the changing needs of your learners is vitally important to address their concerns and attempt to preempt possible barriers. Adjusting teaching and going ‘off scripted’ when unforeseen hurdles show themselves can be difficult for teachers who have planned a lesson or an individual teaching point in a particular way and stepping into the unknown can be difficult. One strategy is to plan in a ‘Plan B’ for when individual learners make more or less progress than expected. Another is to use the wisdom of the crowd and deploy the pupils who have understood the teaching to assist their peers.

By definition, differentiation is different for every teacher and every teaching situation. Still, in this #UKEdChat discussion, which took place on Thursday 12th November 2020 at 8pm(UK) we discussed what the common themes and challenges faced by teachers seeking to differentiate and what strategies can be deployed to maximise learning are.
