Why do we need to know about Hypermobility syndromes? Introducing the Ehlers-Danlos and Hypermobility Disorders School Toolkit for primary and secondary school staff
Details:
Why do we need to know about hypermobility disorders/syndromes (Ehlers-Danlos) plus co-occurring conditions? Attainment and attendance for pupils with hypermobility syndromes is limited by the misunderstanding and misdiagnosis of ‘issues with our tissues’. This presentation describes what Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders are, how they impact pupils with these issues, their attainment and attendance plus other common co-occurrences with other neurodivergent conditions and disorders. Launching late April 2021 is the new UK wide Hypermobility School Toolkit, a free online resource produced by the 2 leading charities in the UK, Ehlers-Danlos.org and HMSA. I am passionate about this and voluntarily leading the content for this toolkit after my personal diagnosis of hypermobility and professional educational career.

Teaching and learning with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder
Details:
We can’t be expected to know about every medical condition but we can be expected to listen and believe. As educators we want the best for the children, young people or adults who learn with us, so when we know they need something we will try to help them meet that need and adjust what we do. We come into contact and work with more people with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders than we may realise. Often they may not know exactly what they need or their needs vary hugely from hour to hour, day to day, so our awareness and willingness to adapt can help. This can make the difference between an education experience that shapes a future and nurtures potential or the denial of any education at all. I’d like to share my experience as a hypermobile teacher, parent to a young adult with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Aunt to a secondary aged nephew with Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder. I’ll share the experiences of other parents and their children and some practical advice on how we can help our colleagues and our learners who may be on the Hypermobility Spectrum.

Making the last five minutes of the lesson count for all children
Details:
To develop a truly inclusive classroom, we need to be aware of children's needs throughout the lesson. All too often we start the lesson with good intentions, but they are lost by the final phase of the lesson I will be looking at how to make inclusion work in the vital last five minutes of the lesson, thinking about how we support transitions for all children. The focus will be on workable small tweaks and adaptations that reduce stress and workload for children and teachers.

Using Adlerian Psychology to build resilience in times of uncertainty

Teachers have faced a stressful year. In some way this sentence is true in any year, as the profession is synonymous with stress, but this year it particularly true. In my talk I want to share the work of Alfred Adler an Austrian psychologist who developed a philosophy of living that helps people to manage their emotions and seize control of their life when the unexpected happens. The talk will give a brief outline of his life, some of his ideas and a few examples of how they can be applied in educational settings.

Climate Change: A Safeguarding Issue?
Details:
With stigma and barriers in dealing with mental health dropping, the rise of eco-anxiety and the impacts of climate change becoming more tangible, now is the right time to put forward the argument that climate change issues should be considered when it comes to a school’s safeguarding duties. Framing the climate crisis as such will strengthen the argument to your SLT in moving the issue away from tokenism to whole-school agency.

The Ultimate Humor Equation to Augmenting Students' Engagement in Class at all levels
Details:
Of late, it is becoming challenging, at times, to get students fully engaged in the teaching-learning process be it face-to-face, or online. This simple technique will enable teachers, educators, and practitioners to easily use an equation combining three main elements namely humor, student, and the lesson's content to capture students' attention and thus redirect his/her focus on the lesson.

Cultural Capital....Whose Cultural Capital?
Details:
What does it mean for schools to deliver Cultural Capital? This needs to be deconstructed to enable educators to think more deeply about what Cultural Capital actually means and what it stands for. The ultimate question is whose Cultural Capital are we talking about? Is it the Stormzy versus Mozart choice that we are making? Or is it more profound than simply a choice between modern and classical? popular culture versus tradition and the test of time? And where does a drive for a Govian model of Cultural Capital leave class, race, gender equality?

Blended learning is here to stay!
Details:
The pandemic opened up a wealth of new tools and rapidly accelerated their adoption into traditional teaching. In this contribution, I will share the edtech toolbox I will keep beyond Covid-19. These consist of free, easy-to-use and no-fuss websites and apps that have proven to improve students’ engagement and intrinsic motivation. I will share concrete examples as to how digital tools can help build camaraderie and positive relationships in both a socially distanced and remote class setting. Lastly, I will present how video recordings of class content eased my workload and how a combination of online and offline work in a station rotation lesson can support teachers to give frequent, detailed and individual feedback to their students.

I will discuss the possibility of Owen's model simulating PRIMM, and the applications PRIMM may have outside of the computing classroom.
