Often our learners find abstract concepts difficult to grasp, especially for younger children. The tactile feel of an object has the power to bring real meaning to a learning experience in a way that few other things can. From artefacts from the past to treasured personal possessions, these can bring extra insights which the written word can struggle to articulate, or that chalk and talk can convey.
Even in our digital age, where many items can be viewed in high definition and in three dimensions, zoomable and viewable from any angle, yet museums and art galleries filled with treasures from the past are more popular than ever. The appeal to see (and even handle) an original of something that seems to be embedded into the human psyche and using artefacts in the classroom can have tangible benefits to learning.
In this #UKEdChat session, which took place on Thursday 28th July 2021 at 8pm(UK), we discussed how objects, new and old, can be used in the classroom to further learning opportunities and enhance the experience.
