At the time of writing it is Pride month where LGBTQ+ rights, history, culture and contributions to society are celebrated, and in best practice, an examination of the struggle, both past and present is explored. School are a reflection of their catchment and the local area, for which they should cater to the needs of the young people in their care. Pride month highlights the needs of a sizable section of that population who can feel marginalised.

As well as the class-based activities which take place in most schools during this month, this moment offers time to reflect on how the school supports young learners from the LGBTQ+ community for the whole of the year, not just now, to ensure that best practice is happening across the school.

But our young people are not the only ones who need support. Teaching and other staff from the LGBTQ+ may also need support at times, and both the senior team and the rank and file need to sometimes be reminded that it is a diverse world with diverse people.

An excellent resource is Shaun Dellenty‘ book (see the review here).

In this #UKEdChat session, which took place on Thursday 9th June 2022 at 8pm(UK), we discussed how to support members of the LGBTQ+ community, how to ensure an inclusive environment for all, how to shift the culture both inside and outside of school.

  1. What does an inclusive school look like?
  2. What happens during Pride month in your school currently?
  3. How could your school do more and develop during Pride month?
  4. How can school become more inclusive places, especially for the LGBTQ+ community?
  5. How can school better support families with members from the LGBTQ+ community?
  6. What school policies should be in place to deal with LGBTQ+phobic bullying and harassment?
  7. What will you personally try to do better this Pride month?
  8. Cite example of best practice seen during Pride celebrations in schools.
