Health and well-being for school staff

This course has been designed to support school staff, including teachers, leaders and support staff to devise a sustainable work-life plan centred on positive mental health and well-being. With four central elements supporting our health, this course offers staff the opportunity to step back and manage a positive work-life integration. Encouraging staff to better relax, eat, move and sleep will lead to healthier choices and better equipped to face the daily challenges of the job.

Learning to Code

With more use of technology being used on a daily basis, understanding the coding systems that support is critical to help develop computational thinking and enabling the skill of writing software that can play such an important part of life.  Coding can appear like learning a new language, but this course supports teachers with practical and computer-based programmes, strategies and resources that help build confidence so that teachers can learn to code alongside pupils.

Please note, this course is primarily aimed at Primary school teachers and pupils.

Metacognition for schools

This half-day INSET staff training aims to help you inform your teaching and leadership staff about the developments in Metacognition research, and how teachers can use practical strategies to get pupils’ thinking metacognitively to help improve task performance.

Why metacognition?

Research analysis of strategies that impact positively on teaching and learning has been undertaken by the Education Endowment Foundation, and they show that metacognition and self-regulation has a high impact on a very low cost for schools. Click here to read our evidence bank and resources.

Delivered by one of our accredited trainers, the training is inspired by the works of psychologists and researchers, but we explore how their ideas and notions can be applied within classrooms, providing schools with a reasoning why metacognition is important, how it can be used and sustained with a whole-school approach, and offering additional support focusing on reading, writing, or subject specific areas through follow-up (optional) support.

By the end of our training, participants will have:

  • A clear definition and understanding of the basic levels of metacognition;
  • Guidance on how this can be implemented into the classroom (primary, secondary, or FE);
  • How metacognition can support development in reading;
  • How metacognition can support development in writing;
  • How metacognition can be used across all subjects in KS2/KS3/KS4/KS5 setting;
  • Inspiration on how others have developed these concepts into their classroom;
  • A resource (printable) to help staff reflect and develop their practice, in relation to the concepts explored, and reference for further exploration (online training).

This course also offers school leaders and governors ideas and support in developing a whole-school policy for dealing with social media.

Teaching Resilience
