  2. #UKEdChat - Question 1.
Share a time, within your professional practice, where you have seen a true lack of common sense. https://t.co/HGnHB86nXa
#UKEdChat - Question 1. Share a time, within your professional practice, where you have seen a true lack of common sense. pic.twitter.com/HGnHB86nXa
  3. @ukedchat #UKEdChat - A1. In 140 characters? Phew! Tough call. Where to start...!!!
  4. Somehow programming Ss requires all depts/grade teams to sit through at least 4 meetings+complete the same form again and again? #ukedchat
  5. @ukedchat A1 #UKEdChat Could start from the top, and the policies that have created fear, judgements and workloads into teachers lives
  6. Hi there! I'm Jessica, former #sped teacher in NYC and Community Manager @PenpalSchools. Also used to attend @ACSEgham! #ukedchat
  7. @Jessicaraealt @PenpalSchools @ACSEgham Hello Jessica - welcome to the #ukedchat discussion on Common Sense in Education
  8. Quite honestly though, when I think of Common Sense I think of @CommonSenseEd which saved the day so many times! #thankyou #ukedchat
  9. A1 Once an admin couldn't understand why #sped Ss taking 3 diff history exams couldn't have the same test read aloud to them... #ukedchat
  10. @supervxn Ah, the politicians again! They are experts, as you know πŸ™„ #UKEdChat
  11. @UKEdSch Luckily it was a long time ago, I wouldn't blindly go along with it now lol #ukedchat
  12. @teacherchalky1 A lesson learned #UKEdChat Just goes to highlight that some people seem to be lacking any common sense. How do they get away with it?
  13. @ukedchat Yup! Unfortunately, in Israel the Ministry of Education is led by a politician which moves every 2 years or so and brings his ppl. #UKEdChat
  14. @UKEdSch @teacherchalky1 This is the winning question, isn't it!? So many of my days ended with me wondering "how can this happen?" #ukedchat
  15. #UKEdChat - Question 2.
What aspect of educational policy or practice do you think is devoid of any common sense? Why? https://t.co/HwFHBJ5fEN
#UKEdChat - Question 2. What aspect of educational policy or practice do you think is devoid of any common sense? Why? pic.twitter.com/HwFHBJ5fEN
  16. @supervxn Why oh why oh why? #UKEdChat Continuity is needed. As is critique, but some common sense would be great. Just a little bit...please!
  17. @ukedchat Anything that involves adding numbers to a spreadsheet #UKEdChat Who really benefits from it? The students?
  18. A2 So much of it, honestly. I taught in NYC where a lot of policy seems to be reactive instead of proactive. #ukedchat
  19. @digicoled @ukedchat Depends. You need to collect data in order to improve. The point is WHAT data and WHY. #UKEdChat
  20. @Jessicaraealt @UKEdSch I think it's because people often go along with it without pointing out how ridiculous it is, & SLT blindly change things ect #ukedchat
  21. @digicoled @ukedchat But how can we understand anything if it's not clearly organised in a spreadsheet? πŸ™„ #ukedchat
  22. @ukedchat One policy doesn't suit all. Different schools have different teachers, teaching different students #UKEdChat One size does not fit all.
  23. @teacherchalky1 @UKEdSch Oh. So we have that too, I think. The Ministry gives us a template... #ukedchat
  24. @supervxn @digicoled @ukedchat Yes, and how can you collect+share in a way that allows you to spend more time analyzing+acting and less time compiling #ukedchat
  25. @UKEdSch A2 marking for the sake of marking just in case someone looks #ukedchat
  26. @_theteachr Are you using @participate? It's a great way to keep track of the convo during Twitter chats! I'd be lost without it. #ukedchat
  27. A2 - problem is, common sense ain't so common... #ukedchat
  28. @digicoled @ukedchat The key with data is using it as information rather than some simply numbers. What gaps? Where? Align with CPD to support teachers #UKEdChat
  29. @Jessicaraealt @supervxn @digicoled There has to be a better way #UKEdChat We are surrounded by #EdTech, yet the volume of paper used in schools in unbelievable!
  30. @Jessicaraealt @digicoled @ukedchat Big Q. In Israel there's a new job: measurement and assessment coordinator. That's their job, but very few are good a it. #ukedchat
  31. @ukedchat Yes, but often the best solutions are happening in great classrooms and schools, not in a political reaction that make problems feel solved.
  32. @supervxn @digicoled @ukedchat This sounds like my dream!! Literally, I've dreamt about this role.
  33. Changing GCSE grades to 9 to 1, then get this, phasing it in. So this year kids have letters & numbers for grades. Great work! #ukedchat
  34. @ukedchat Anything that is externally marked inconsistently resulting in a negative impact on pupils' wellbeing has to be reconsidered. #ukedchat
  35. #UKEdChat - Question 3.
What sort of decision have you been involved in that were entirely grounded by common sense motivations? https://t.co/JqqpPkBHb0
#UKEdChat - Question 3. What sort of decision have you been involved in that were entirely grounded by common sense motivations? pic.twitter.com/JqqpPkBHb0
  36. @Jessicaraealt Completely and 100% agree #UKEdChat How can that be shared for the greater benefit of the teaching profession as a whole across NYC &world?
  37. @ukedchat @Jessicaraealt @digicoled You need to be able to appear doing stuff while you do nothing. Looks easy, but actually it's pretty hard. #UKEdChat
  38. @_theteachr That SO makes sense......NOT! #UKEdChat - Who thought it would be a good idea? A politician?
  39. @ukedchat Bit more PPA time; keep teachers, save time/money on recruiting/supply. #UKEdChat
  40. @ukedchat Empower teachers, in big and small ways, especially if you are an administrator! It's a small but critical step.
  41. A3 Removing department from whole school meetings that weren't directly relevant #UKEdChat
  42. @ukedchat Lack of joined up thinking 30 K to train start on 22k clear off abroad for better conditions, getting rid of bursaries...
  43. Er, there are more important factors than name when organising classes – I speak as one of many Claires at school. #survivor 😏#ukedchat  https://twitter.com/mumsnet_madness/status/885411246664810497 β€¦
  44. @AllThingsMaths @ukedchat I think retention is actually more important than recruitment #UKEdChat So much expertise leaves the profession. It's criminal.
  45. @UKEdSch A3 using SOW that have been produced by the exam board to fit the spec #ukedchat
  46. @ukedchat NCTL no plan for allocations cut then add...three Yr allocations allow to future plan.
  47. @ukedchat System fragmented UCAS portal awful confusion over routes and qualifications..
  48. @UKEdSch They do to an extent, but the thought of triple marking....... #ukedchat I think it's more when copied work gets marked
  49. @ukedchat The use of ESTYN inspectors who have never done a day of teaching in their lives!
  50. @digicoled @AllThingsMaths @ukedchat Need both.. Increase in pupil nos is huge even if we stem the exits... Need to unpick why.Esp RQT etc CPD support...
  51. @UKEdSch A2: applying the same policies to each and every subject without allowing for any subject specific deviation #UKEdChat
  52. @ukedchat Testing and data that is unnecessary, rather than trusting a teacher's judgements.
  53. @etaknipsa @digicoled @AllThingsMaths The problem is money. Newer teachers are cheaper to employ #UKEdChat Older teachers are more expensive. Budgets budgets budgets!
  54. #UKEdChat - Question 4.
When is it valuable to deviate from common sense in education? https://t.co/mRwnlB0LGn
#UKEdChat - Question 4. When is it valuable to deviate from common sense in education? pic.twitter.com/mRwnlB0LGn
  55. @ukedchat @etaknipsa @digicoled Except they're not when considering value for money. Time for support/recruitment... budgeteers are far too short sighted #UKEdChat
  56. @ukedchat Going around and around with 'policies' and meetings for weeks rather than just getting something done that takes 2 minutes!
  57. @ukedchat To cover your back? Going off piste can leave you vulnerable #UKEdChat
  58. A4 someone pointed this out earlier: common sense isn't always common, esp when it's something new and unfamiliar #ukedchat
  59. @AllThingsMaths Yes. If successful, you are a creative teacher. If it fails, then you have failed #UKEdChat
  60. @ukedchat We can become set in our ways in Education. However, we have to be able to take risks & be innovative in order to support pupils. #ukedchat
  61. Emailed daily with offers of Β£5000 bonus + subsidised accomm just because I'm maths. And we're subsidising all the supply agencies #UKEdChat
  62. @ukedchat Got to find your tribe! Surround yourself with good mentors, role models, and brilliant people! Twitter can be helpful for that!
  63. @ukedchat @lcatherine91 But they don't always - hence risk. So supportive culture to try things out #UKEdChat Just because 1 thing fails β‰  failed teacher #UKEdChat
  64. @lcatherine91 @ukedchat The world is changing so quickly... and we need to change with it. We don't even know what jobs we're preparing students for #UKEdChat
  65. #UKEdChat - Question 5.
How is it possible to teach common sense to our students? Should we? https://t.co/VOAT9kgasX
#UKEdChat - Question 5. How is it possible to teach common sense to our students? Should we? pic.twitter.com/VOAT9kgasX
  66. A5: independent learners! Get 'em to make their own choices and decisions and guide them. Discuss the decisions. #UKEdChat
  67. A5 I think this also requires parents, not just teachers. It's important to work together with parents! #ukedchat
  68. @ukedchat A5 #UKEdChat - teach common sense by using & modeling it in front of class each day. The lessons, the structure, the medium is your message.
  69. @AllThingsMaths @ukedchat And pupils will be part of a world that changes quicker than what we are used to now. Less comfort and more innovation is needed. #ukedchat
  70. @AllThingsMaths They need our guidance? Yes, from us old wise ones, who are oozing with common sense 😜 #UKEdChat
  71. @lcatherine91 @AllThingsMaths So, it makes sense to teach them with a narrow curriculum then? #UKEdChat πŸ™„
  72. @ukedchat @lcatherine91 I think a lovely wide curriculum where concepts are interlinked and students learn how to think and apply #UKEdChat
  73. @ukedchat A5. Collaboration skills are key. Pupils must problem solve together in order to gain a better understanding of the world. #ukedchat
  74. @CharteredColl A2 suspect I will go against many, after a few yrs of teaching, some in ITT but more once skills embedded & more aware of context #ukedchat
  75. Fundamentally, I think there is a lack of common sense by many in educ due to poor judgement calls #UKEdChat mixed with power & control.
  76. #UKEdChat - Question 6.
If you were put in charge of 'Common Sense' in your setting, what would be the number 1 priority for change? https://t.co/v8OJi9akAf
#UKEdChat - Question 6. If you were put in charge of 'Common Sense' in your setting, what would be the number 1 priority for change? pic.twitter.com/v8OJi9akAf
  77. @ukedchat @Jessicaraealt There's lots that can be done to support parents but I think their accountability needs to be increased (contraversial - eek!) #UKEdChat
  78. @ukedchat A6 'junk data', generating grades for the sake of grades despite the tests having limited validity #ukedchat
  79. @doc_kristy But, they make pretty graphs, which are really impressive and beautiful for the .... Oh, hang on #UKEdChat 😎
  80. A6: last minute fire fighting. Do it well from the start and avoid all that rubbish last minute in Y11 #UKEdChat
  81. A6: Quit quoting Ofsted - esp when it's a lie to get you to do something that isn't really needed #UKEdChat #onaroll ;)
  82. .@UKEdSch stress importance of thinking. Think before speaking, doing something. Think is something sensible given what they know #ukedchat
  83. But, more generally, I would put a person in charge of edu policy nationally, who was a teacher previously #UKEdChat Such as @EmmaHardyMP 😜
  84. @AllThingsMaths You have permission to drop them altogether #UKEdChat - You're fired ... Ofsted πŸ‘‰πŸΌ
  85. @ukedchat @EmmaHardyMP YES. I talk with Ts about this all the time. You. Can. Not. Lead. Teachers. If. You. Have. Not. Taught. #ukedchat
  86. @ukedchat Consistency across the school. It creates a one size fits all, all books&displays the same easy to monitor system of teaching&learning.
  87. @ukedchat A6 I'd also consider 'real time' reporting to reduce pinch points in the year, some subjects eg, MFL test regularly anyway #ukedchat
  88. BOOM! It's 9pm. That's it for another #UKEdChat session. Thanks for the contributions πŸ˜‡ See the archive now atΒ https://t.co/tCj8YOjnQd https://t.co/bB8OA5HxRG

  89. @doc_kristy Interesting idea #UKEdChat Would be fascinating to see how it would be implemented, and received.
  90. Thoroughly enjoyed my first #UKEdChat! Pop over to @PenpalSchools to learn how to connect your Ss with PenPals around the world!
