  2. #UKEdChat Q1. What do you understand multimedia to be and how effective do you feel you use it in the classroom? https://t.co/QZLyMBOJI1
#UKEdChat Q1. What do you understand multimedia to be and how effective do you feel you use it in the classroom? pic.twitter.com/QZLyMBOJI1
  3. @ICTmagic A1. #UKEdChat - Anything that needs a plug, or batteries! And needs to be turned off and turned on again regularly
  4. A1: Multimedia is an art that is not limited by any one medium. I like to think that I use it to good effect #UKedchat
  5. @digicoled Perhaps the reverse - A beard might be handy for wiping the blackboard. [Come on... admit you've thought of doing it!] #UKEdChat
  6. A1: Multimedia = giving same/related lesson content in different forms. Effective use is when it supports learning. #UKEdChat
  7. @ICTmagic A1 Any device / software / sites that allows teaching and learning using different media (audio/video/images etc) #ukedchat
  8. #UKEdChat Q2. How can video be used in class and what are the pros/cons?
Remember to use the hashtag in replies. https://t.co/2TxYX4JJkk

  9. @ICTmagic A1 Any device / software / sites that allows teaching and learning using different media (audio/video/images etc) #ukedchat
  10. @ICTmagic A2 In many ways. In Sci, sometimes use it to show practicals which can't be done / very difficult to obtain results #ukedchat
  11. @ICTmagic A2. #UKEdChat - Pro - Video can help explain/show things that books & talking just cannot.
  12. @ICTmagic hi all #UKEdChat A1. multimedia wud b available apps, tools, tablets, or any other devices & social media, I use various things
  13. @ICTmagic A2 #UKEdChat Con: Videos streamed can show unsuitable videos/adverts, and online can buffer midway :-(
  14. @digicoled So the entry level of prior knowledge/skill is lower? Might that stunt the pupils' mindset? #ukedchat
  15. A1: Depends if video media is used as vessel for learning e.g video about X, or is the focus of the learning e.g film making #UKEdChat
  16. @ICTmagic A2 I get the Ss to make videos using @AdobeSpark for their review work! Otherwise to back up learning or show other experiments #UKEdChat
  17. A2: #UKEdChat Pro: Ss can go back and view content when extending their knowledge
  18. @ICTmagic A2 Cons If shown w/ no relevance to lesson outcomes. If Ss don't note key learning (my Ss hv Qs to answer as they watch) #ukedchat
  19. Does multimedia = technology/device/ICT? What about interpretive dance or sketches? #UKEdChat
  20. @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 Sadly funding/poor spending decisions has completely restricted use of good multimedia in some schools #UKedchat
  21. @ICTmagic @digicoled That's how I see it. It's part of a package but only one part and not useful on its own #UkEdChat #edtech
  22. @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 A1: use of any Appropriate device/system to engage, teach, learn from 😀 #UKedchat
  23. @ICTmagic A2. Video can b used as a warm up, or sts cud create their own videos on various topics #ukedchat, PROS-lively, effective CONS-techknowledge
  24. @OLewis_coaching @AdobeSpark I know which I would prefer, but do you think there is a place for content consumption, rather than content creation? #ukedchat
  25. As long as it is used to enhance learning and not a substitute for something that can be done with no tech... #ukedchat  https://twitter.com/ictmagic/status/847527338871074817
  26. @ICTmagic @OLewis_coaching @AdobeSpark #ukedchat is content consumption too passive? No guarantee of what learners are taking away from it?
  27. #UKEdChat Q3. How can we use audio media to invoke atmosphere, understanding and learning in the classroom?
Remember to use the hashtag! https://t.co/IlHQ0MWKCw
#UKEdChat Q3. How can we use audio media to invoke atmosphere, understanding and learning in the classroom? Remember to use the hashtag! pic.twitter.com/IlHQ0MWKCw
  28. One of the best sci lessons I did - making an e-lab book on iPads with pupils videoing experiment and adding verbal commentary #UKEdChat
  29. @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @mscro1 @rondelle10_b #UKedchat love a good video at the very start of a lesson, darken the room & project a video of a forest at night...see if that inspires 👍
  30. @MsMorrisTeach @MarcNeesam @OLewis_coaching @AdobeSpark @EDpuzzle Indeed. Asking questions in any form means that the audience need to go from passive to active. #ukedchat
  31. @ICTmagic @AdobeSpark Consumption yes. If there's an activity running parallel to, or post, the video with a clear link to learning #ukedchat
  32. #ukedchat spent lessons b4 to go through the digital skills so they could use them with no fuss on sci. Good multimedia use needs planning
  33. @ICTmagic @NVandenAbeele @mscro1 @tips4teachingUK @rondelle10_b Regularly use sound clips in English to support descriptive writing. Really powerful when focussing upon atmosphere etc. #ukedchat
  34. Sorry #ukedchat hope you don't mind a T from South Africa joining in :-)
  35. #ukedchat A3.Utube videos work 4 my sts, I use audio tools (vocaroo, audioboom)they record themselves, like a radioshow, radio advertisment  https://twitter.com/ICTmagic/status/847529020942057476
  36. @MsMorrisTeach We are based in the UK, not restricted by it! Welcome! 😊 #ukedchat
  37. A3: useful to demonstrate how important instruction is when you cannot see anything. Had them blindfolded &a following voice #ukedchat
  38. Setting up role play area - having downloaded sound effects (creaking boat!) in background to make the role play more 'real' #UKEdChat
  39. @ICTmagic #UKEdChat A3. Dare I mention that pupils making podcasts can create great effects?
  40. @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @mscro1 @tips4teachingUK A3 Can be used to provide sounds of experiences / locations Ss are unfamiliar w/. Helps contextualise learning context #ukedchat
  41. #fluencytutor is a great sound multimedia for Ss to practice reading aloud and Ts can track progress #edtech @texthelp #ukedchat
  42. @digicoled I once had a great lesson asking pupils to make sound effects and jingles for podcasts. #ukedchat
  43. @MarcNeesam Thanks 4 sharing that one as well! Have to check it our #UKedchat
  44. #ukedchat Q4. What are the downsides to using multimedia in the classroom?
Remember to use the hashtag in replies. https://t.co/7aPTPjBdYt
#ukedchat Q4. What are the downsides to using multimedia in the classroom? Remember to use the hashtag in replies. pic.twitter.com/7aPTPjBdYt
  45. @ICTmagic @digicoled Excellent idea, LOL, must have been fun #UKedchat, my highschool sts did a 1 minute radio advertisment, loved it
  46. As a literacy starter used to show pic on board then we 'jumped into it' pretending we were there - bit Marry Poppins! #UKEdChat
  47. @mscro1 @ICTmagic By re/creating part of a story in a podcast can lead to really deep learning and understanding. #drama #ukedchat
  48. Q4: Ts are distracted by the glitz and forget to teach the skills #ukedchat
  49. @MsMorrisTeach I’d agree with some colleagues #ukedchat The teaching and learning needs to stay at the heart of all #edtech
  50. @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @tips4teachingUK @rondelle10_b @MarcNeesam @MrPatelsawesome @OLewis_coaching Too much multimedia isn't very good I think #UkEdchat, maybe Sts can get bored, so use it wisely, but have them create their own, esp.quizes
  51. @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @tips4teachingUK @rondelle10_b @MarcNeesam @MrPatelsawesome @OLewis_coaching Sts can learn even more while creating quizes, like #kahoot on the topics of their interests or the curriculum, we did it, was fun #UKedchat
  52. @ICTmagic Staff can rely too much on it and learning suffers. Or it stops working and they panic #ukedchat
  53. A4: Multimedia use needs planning. If being used to support non-ICT/computing learning students may need digi-skills 1st #ukedchat
  54. There is nothing worse than #edtech being used for the sake of it. It must be purposeful and enhance teaching #ukedchat
  55. Does your school / teachers / pupils create and broadcast #podcasts ? #edtech #ukedchat Let us know the link (by DM please) so we can share
  56. @mscro1 @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @tips4teachingUK @rondelle10_b @MarcNeesam @MrPatelsawesome @OLewis_coaching If used correctly, Ss will always be more stimulated than in teacher-centered paper writing classes. It must be substitution #ukedchat
  57. #ukedchat Q5. What barriers are there to using media in the classroom?
Remember to use the hashtag in replies. https://t.co/DYIKkx9qMc
#ukedchat Q5. What barriers are there to using media in the classroom? Remember to use the hashtag in replies. pic.twitter.com/DYIKkx9qMc
  58. A5: Teacher ability and confidence. School resources. #ukedchat
  59. @ASTsupportAAli Isn't there an argument for experimentation. Don't know if it will improve until you try? #ukedchat
  60. I agree, always try 2 use it in different way & am 4 less Teacher-centered class, more teacher- facilitator, when tool R available #UKedchat  https://twitter.com/MsMorrisTeach/status/847532663602900993
  61. A5: Without a doubt, staff confidence is the biggest barrier. Time to model use during staff meetings or coaching is essential #ukedchat
  62. Thx 4 a nice #UKedchat, need 2 go now, greetings from Croatia :) talk 2 U soon @ICTmagic
  63. #ukedchat IWB are still largely ineffective in most schools because of lack of teacher understanding in using them fully.
  64. A5: funding in less affluent schools and countries. #edtech is starting to create a wider gap btw haves and have nots #UKedchat
  65. @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @mscro1 @tips4teachingUK @rondelle10_b #ukedchat music to set scene and inspire senses based writing. Magic by music. Podcasts for revision. S's love them
  66. @ICTmagic #ukedchat #A4 Wifi issues; not enough devices; time taken to log in...infrastructure needs to be in place otherwise learning will be minimal
  67. @ICTmagic I did, can't always join U, but will be #Ukedchat when ever I can, bye now :)
  68. @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @mscro1 @tips4teachingUK @MarcNeesam Had to think hard! V engaging videos w/ little scientific content. So explained main concepts I should've just done in 1st place #ukedchat
  69. @MrPatelsawesome @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @mscro1 @rondelle10_b @MarcNeesam @OLewis_coaching Can be, I've seen some terrible spending on tech over the years 😞 and some brilliant...then some free like Google!! 😀 #ukedchat
  70. @MarcNeesam V much agree and tech fails too. I've given up with mine as it stops learning while I faff! #ukedchat sure they can be fab  https://twitter.com/MarcNeesam/status/847533524026626049
  71. SMARTboard recorder one of the best tools. Gd for pupils to record maths working and share to other classes. Really underused. #ukedchat
  72. #UKEdChat Q6. How can schools use media to strengthen home learning/communication?
Remember to use the hashtag in replies. https://t.co/QuznL74L4J

  73. @CMRaymontHall @ICTmagic @ukedchat Agree with change - staff who are resistant to change will make multimedia into a battle. Mindset is so important! #ukedchat
  74. @nickotkdV @ICTmagic #ukedchat & does it support S's in exams. English S's need to be writers, therefore I get them writing. Non tech but v much a skill needed
  75. @rondelle10_b @ICTmagic @NVandenAbeele @mscro1 @tips4teachingUK @MarcNeesam @MrPatelsawesome @OLewis_coaching Like any subject, CPD is key. Distinguish between sub knowledge and pedagogy. Invest in kit, invest in training. EVALUATE impact #ukedchat
  76. @SciTeacher1999 Depends on the #EdTech you're using! Zzish, @educake etc log performance...others don't! #ukedchat
  77. @SusanSEnglish There are some great tools and tricks - though not always easy to find! #ukedchat
  78. @TGolightly @ICTmagic @ukedchat yup! But it is important that they see why change is needed/benefits to get them on side #ukedchat
  79. @ICTmagic @TGolightly @ukedchat need to find the right person to lead whatever initiative it is so that others buy into the idea #ukedchat
  80. A6: We've run hands-on workshops for parents on how to use iPads and apps to help their children at home #ukedchat
  81. @MrPatelsawesome Should they be put on before they understand how to use it, or before they understand the value? #ukedchat
  82. @CMRaymontHall @ICTmagic @ukedchat Completely agree, an inspirational Computing lead who takes the time to explain things can make a huge difference #ukedchat
  83. @TGolightly I agree. I'm told very little time is given to ICT in teacher training. NQTs could be leading the way on this. #ukedchat
  84. Q6: We put QR codes on homework and letters which lead parents/kids to videos/resources which will help them with their work #ukedchat
  85. @ukedchat Not fantastic sadly, but parental engagement is one of our schools key targets atm!
  86. @digicoled Some of them we can track how many views the videos have had, but otherwise we rely on feedback from the children
  87. Last #UKEdChat Question!
Q7. Share an experience where media was used well in your lessons.
Remember to use the hashtag in replies. https://t.co/MDMxYx6Ub7
Last #UKEdChat Question! Q7. Share an experience where media was used well in your lessons. Remember to use the hashtag in replies. pic.twitter.com/MDMxYx6Ub7
  88. 1 of the best tools is the visualiser. Gd for modelling writing and art, showing class book, looking at sci exp., + lots more! #ukedchat
  89. @Mr_RichTea @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @mscro1 @tips4teachingUK @rondelle10_b @MrPatelsawesome @OLewis_coaching @SciTeacher1999 We have a history of tech fads - tech came but people didnt think how to use it. Think that's why schools are more cautious now #ukedchat
  90. @ICTmagic a long time ago now... but a radio station that was broadcasted to the local area. Students DJing etc. Was awesome #ukedchat
  91. @TGolightly @BlipparEDU @aurasma #AugmentedReality is great fun and @BlipparEDU can be just a picture that goes out to them with so many facets imbedded #ukedchat
  92. @MrPatelsawesome @ICTmagic Awesome Pran! I use the matrix motorway scene....may steal your idea 💡 #ukedchat
  93. Q7 I love using multimedia to make learning more collaborative! Tools like @padlet are amazing for creating collaborative opps #ukedchat
  94. @ICTmagic @KLMorgan_2 @NVandenAbeele @mscro1 @tips4teachingUK @rondelle10_b @MarcNeesam @MrPatelsawesome @OLewis_coaching A4 #ukedchat It's whether it works or not. Tech fails cause most interruption for me. Some folk only do multimedia & skip other elements
  95. WW2 topic supported Y4 teacher and her class to make news videos about the war on iPad moviemaker. #UKEdChat
  96. A7: we used @cospaces_ioto have Ss develop sustainable ares to combine #geography and #history together #ukedchat #edtech
  97. On iPads got Epic Citadel app (Unreal engine demo) Y1 used it when looking at castles and writing and Y5 used it as fiction prompt #UKEdChat
