Good evening, welcome to #UKEdChat - This week focusing on: Handling Homework NINE Questions to follow. Q1, Q2...Q9. Answer A1, A2...A9 :-) pic.twitter.com/cSs5oHRUR7
  2. #UKEdChat - Question 1.
What are your personal thoughts and views about setting homework (as a teacher or parent)? https://t.co/YhsOnTiaZe
#UKEdChat - Question 1. What are your personal thoughts and views about setting homework (as a teacher or parent)? pic.twitter.com/YhsOnTiaZe
  3. @UKEdSch A1 home work is essential in helping consolidate and in revision, it's important to use variety and not set it for no reason #ukedchat
  4. @UKEdSch Exactly, setting differentiated homework or catering the work to the students abilities & personal development #ukedchat
  5. @ukedchat Also think that teachers need to be working together to check levels of homework set #UKEdChat Pupils need some downtime
  6. @Team_Satchel @UKEdSch That *could* be quite time consuming to plan, mark, and develop #UKEdChat
  7. @teacherchalky1 Would completely agree, and think that homework looks very different in a primary setting, compared to KS4 #UKEdChat
  8. @ukedchat @ICTmagic Q1. Homework should be bare minimum-student centred catering to different thoughts and mindsets. As a parent- feel some kind of HW is a must
  9. @ukedchat It serves a purpose but it shouldn't be every night or something the children can't access. It should also be marked.
  10. @ukedchat Marking homework becomes less of priority in comparison with every thing else we have to mark or plan etc
  11. @ApraRalli @ICTmagic Which is interesting within itself. Some parents demand more, some parents demand a lot less. Striking the balance is hard #UKEdChat
  12. As a parent I feel KS1 In our school get too much. My son is 5. He should be able to enjoy his home time. Not panic about doing hw!  https://twitter.com/ukedchat/status/865281185647407105
  13. #UKEdChat - Question 2.
What is the approach of your school (homework policy) and how is it implemented? https://t.co/nhKHlXQ18z
#UKEdChat - Question 2. What is the approach of your school (homework policy) and how is it implemented? pic.twitter.com/nhKHlXQ18z
  14. @ukedchat @ICTmagic As a teacher, for me to know where my Ss are & for me to give feedback a class interaction is more valuable than HW,which could be copied
  15. @ukedchat @ICTmagic That is the issue...and me being both a teacher and parent...it's a tricky balance to maintain.homework must be engaging and productive
  16. @ukedchat A1: Needs to be worthwhile (benefit EVERYONE involved) and not just for the sake of policy. It shld have purpose after completion. #UKEdChat
  17. @ukedchat Engage them & enhance their learning.Rather than a worksheet get them involved with research work/creating something outside.📸 #ukedchat
  18. #UKEdChat A2.our policy is clear on setting time for HW .grade 6- UpTo 30 minutes ,for grade 7 UpTo 40 minutes & Grade 8,9,10 are need based
  19. Agreed! Overloading students with homework can be damaging and discouraging to those who can't cope. #ukedchat  https://twitter.com/MissHLancs/status/865282980671107072
  20. @wnfranklin Absolutely, and 100% agree. #UKEdChat Any space for worksheets?
  21. @UKEdSch A2 for each unit of work there are set homework tasks that must be set #ukedchat
  22. @UKEdSch I don't think this always has a positive impact on learning #UKedchat
  23. #UKEdChat - Question 3.
What sorts of conversations do you have with colleagues about the homework tasks being set? https://t.co/JxoCb7ZraV
#UKEdChat - Question 3. What sorts of conversations do you have with colleagues about the homework tasks being set? pic.twitter.com/JxoCb7ZraV
  24. @ukedchat In secondary, very little #UKEdChat Every doing their own thing! Result=some time pupils have no homework, and other times too much :-/
  25. #UKEdChat A3. The tasks need to provide Ss with extension and scope of inquiry.so designing tasks takes up a lot of our collaborative time.
  26. @ukedchat Yes but only if the worksheet helps structure or guide the activity (especially for young chn). Otherwise, freedom of expression! #UKEdChat
  27. #ukedchat My son age 11 despite struggling with processing problems would insist on finishing homework that took him 1.5hrs (proud but sad)
  28. @UKEdSch A3 is the homework you're setting going to improve progress or engagement? If the answer is no, why set it? #ukedchat
  29. @ukedchat I think it is still important to engage sec in this way. Especially if 1 person is doing the h/w & they all copy. 🙄
  30. @UKEdSch A1 I set homelearning that helps chn practise things they've been learning in class. Parents can see what they've been doing too #UKEdChat
  31. @UKEdSch A1 Chn often suggest things they'd like to do for homelearning such as a maths puzzle they started in school. #UKEdChat
  32. @ukedchat It is also important for pupils to have a space to do it in school. Defeats the purpose but many won't have a chance at home. #ukedchat
  33. #UKEdChat A3 my personal thought HW should not be assessed, even as a formative however, many differ on that .I'd rather Ss read up at home .
  34. @keran77 Consolidating, or building upon the skills taught in school? #ukedchat
  35. @ukedchat It should be useful preparation (research) or practice (reading). Nothing that hasn't been taught. Not always necessary. Not for policy sake
  36. #UKEdChat A3 my personal thought HW should not be assessed, even as a formative however, many differ on that .I'd rather Ss read up at home .
  37. @ukedchat Unsure of the impact at times. Sometimes parents also seem to get more worked up than students about it.
  38. @ukedchat Always vital to think about what the pupils are really getting out of the h/w and if it is worth it... #ukedchat
  39. @UKEdSch A2: We've moved all our maths hwk for KS2 onto @MyMathsUK to reduce paper handling and automate marking. Positive response so far #UKEdChat
  40. #UKEdChat But does this always happen? Rhetorical question, but more thought needs to be given on a whole-school level.  https://twitter.com/guruloula/status/865285917451444224
  41. #ukedchat We provide free activity sheets designed to inspire creative teachers to provide stimulating lessons - we used to teach
  42. #UKEdChat - Question 4.
What are the most positive aspects of setting homework that you have experienced? https://t.co/fPcfG0SdLY
#UKEdChat - Question 4. What are the most positive aspects of setting homework that you have experienced? pic.twitter.com/fPcfG0SdLY
  43. @UKEdSch #Ukedchat interleaving revision style homework for Y11 and the importance of using focused and relevant tasks to engage & move learning on
  44. @UKEdSch Both I suppose. If a child can remember what they did earlier in the week, apply it or extend understanding then that's progress #ukedchat
  45. My only answer to #homework issues is ... #flippingtheclassroom, the flipped classroom = 21st reply to homework I think #UKEDchat
  46. @ukedchat Definitely a whole school agreement to be made as a whole school message should be sent to parents. Always how does it benefit chn?
  47. @wnfranklin @MyMathsUK Ah, but is it the child doing the homework...or the parent or sibling ;0) #UKEdChat
  48. @teacherchalky1 @ukedchat @UKEdSch I agree - revision of learning - embeds ideas, process & offers opportunities for S's to independently apply knowledge & skills #ukedchat
  49. @ukedchat They need time to be chn too. I've had parents sigh at the amount their 5yo is doing. When do they get to be chn?
  50. A4 flipped learning, to check understanding a unit after covering in class (longer term recall) past paper exam ques practice #UKEdChat
  51. @ukedchat When setting hw that got pupils 2 think, discuss & share ideas. No right or wrong answers, and encourage collaboration with family #ukedchat
  52. @ukedchat As a parent of a 3yo I would hate for him to loose his learning through play at home because homework dictates it should be formalised.
  53. @UKEdSch S's flourishing & doing extra independent research to complement class taught #ukedchat Engagement with topics
  54. Seeing children come back to class having fully consolidated their learning can be really rewarding; it means they're empowered #ukedchat  https://twitter.com/UKEdSch/status/865286382247444480
  55. @SusanSEnglish @ukedchat @UKEdSch For Y11 & Y13 I set short daily revision tasks to help get them into a routine & structure their revision #ukedchat
  56. Best hw recently was to test ph of various household liquids, then discuss what we found in class (flipped the task) #UKEdChat
  57. #UKEdChat A4. Certain children when given freedom of time & end product.created most wonderful things.minecraft civilisations, videos.etc.
  58. @ukedchat At secondary - consideration to prioritising teacher time with students. Can prep be done independently to maximise class time?
  59. @UKEdSch A2 5 spellings chosen by chn, a maths puzzle/task and some writing/science plus reading. #ukedchat
  60. @teacherchalky1 @SusanSEnglish @ukedchat @UKEdSch And these are awesome too! Used a few in my class up here in Scotland
  61. @teacherchalky1 @SusanSEnglish @ukedchat @UKEdSch That's a good idea; do you find getting students into the 'revision mindset' a challenge? #ukedchat
  62. @UKEdSch A2: Non-maths hwk tends to be topic/project based (designing, modelling, creating) with 2 week timescale to encourage quality. #UKEdChat
  63. @UKEdSch A3 I share things with colleagues my class have enjoyed or found challenging. #ukedchat
  64. @teacherchalky1 @ukedchat @UKEdSch I do longer more detailed HW for Y11 & did some shorter specific revision tasks #ukedchat But, the detailed proved more tangible for my S's
  65. @ukedchat Only set when it has a point, not just because a policy says it should be set. Consolidation based, flipped learning or knowledge based.
  66. @ukedchat Is that because of the current set up and what they went through? As the educators we should decide and stand by clear while school approach
  67. @UnioByHarness @teacherchalky1 @SusanSEnglish @ukedchat @UKEdSch Yeh, hw does help to manage revision for exam and get them into the revision mindset also how to focus out of class
  68. @UnioByHarness @SusanSEnglish @ukedchat @UKEdSch It's a constant challenge, so if you get them doing 15 mins a day then that's over 50 hours worth of revision without thinking about it
  69. @ApraRalli #UKEdChat Sounds great when they get so absorbed in their learning
  70. @ukedchat If it's a justifiable decision with clear reasoning than it's simply a conversation with any concerned parent.
  71. @ukedchat A3. What a great Q. To date, none besides seeing how much is being set. Worked in places that rank & share this info #ukedchat
  72. #UKEdChat - Question 5.
What details do you focus on and review when reporting on homework? https://t.co/qZftEd1GVY
#UKEdChat - Question 5. What details do you focus on and review when reporting on homework? pic.twitter.com/qZftEd1GVY
  73. @digicoled Thanks for your reaction, but for FTC, technology is not needed! #ukedchat. Flipping traditionally works, too (coursebooks, manuals) ...
  74. @ukedchat Has been a very satisfying experience. I learn a lot from them when they lead ...a very engaging process
  75. A4: I do love when we set practical, creative tasks over holidays and the parents/children really engage in making it together #UKEdChat
  76. @Sfm36 @UnioByHarness @SusanSEnglish @ukedchat @UKEdSch Next year I'm going to be putting a short video on youtube to go with each task clarifying the key points #ukedchat
  77. Yes! Making sure they have access to the right resources is essential too. Letting S's know that quality is important to T's too #ukedchat  https://twitter.com/lcatherine91/status/865283561968074755
  78. @ukedchat Not at all have done it for 16 years to help kids prepare for exams and manage their revision and exam prep
  79. @UKEdSch #UKEdChat A5: Its a battle for us to get our parents to support their children in ensuring HW is completed - we focus on that!
  80. @ukedchat Reporting only back to student. Praising the effort, commitment and time they took on homework 'task'. #UKEdChat
  81. #UKEdChat A5.what has been the Ss learning to what extent did the learning out come get met & how much is the child able to reflect & review
  82. @UKEdSch Teacher: set it when needed. This is not ever week though. #UKEdChat
  83. @ukedchat Creative projects with huge amount of choice to inspire creativity and time with parents. Had some amazing results. Y6 hat = revision books
  84. #ukedchat have I missed the chat? what time does it finish?
  85. #UKEdChat - Question 6.
How do you support pupils who are genuinely unable to regularly complete homework tasks? https://t.co/chntlmH0Yp
#UKEdChat - Question 6. How do you support pupils who are genuinely unable to regularly complete homework tasks? pic.twitter.com/chntlmH0Yp
  86. H/W is invaluable, but ensuring that those children who need additional support with it know that they can reach out is crucial #ukedchat
  87. @TGolightly In Early Years? You set homework in early years? Surely, any home task for EYFS should focus on reading skills, in a positive way #UKEdChat
  88. @Sfm36 @UKEdSch If it's rushed, untidy, missing bits, obviously copied, no structure to their answers or if they haven't bothered reading the Q #ukedchat
  89. Engaged parents make the world of difference to students - not just academically, but emotionally, too. #ukedchat  https://twitter.com/TGolightly/status/865288993767870464
  90. @UKEdSch Can you clarify reasons for not doing? Home life, lack of understanding? Time due to out of school clubs? #UKEdChat
  91. Sorry - late to the party. My tuppence - best hwk effort has always been when there is a bit of freedom and space for creativity #ukedchat
  92. #UKEdChat A6 .always starts with an extension then with breaking it down and then parental intervention at times is sought.but that's rare
  93. A6. Provide an area for S's to do HW at school. The school library is a good place with a librarian to help too, if you are lucky! #ukedchat
  94. @ukedchat A6. I think a certain level of understanding goes a long way. Some issues need investigating #UKEdChat
  95. A6: Talk to them and agree on what they can complete. Takeaway homework works great for this #ukedchat
  96. @UKEdSch Suss out the reason why. Is it because of time, distractions or do they find it hard to access the homework and need support #ukedchat
  97. @Sfm36 @UKEdSch There's no punishment for not doing homelearning. Writing is a short piece for Yr 3. Any child who wants to do at sch can #ukedchat
  98. Enjoy doing some of the hwk my own (primary level) kids get - short project based with choice of approach. We do it together #ukedchat
  99. @UKEdSch @Sfm36 I think as long as you treat Ss as individuals you can't go wrong #ukedchat
  100. @UKEdSch A4: 'Reluctant homeworkers' bringing in unexpectedly creative pieces of work when given a project instead of a worksheet! #UKEdChat
  101. #UKEdChat - Question 7.
Do accessibility and tracking of homework have an impact on quality and hand in rates? https://t.co/bghyVv0A9t
#UKEdChat - Question 7. Do accessibility and tracking of homework have an impact on quality and hand in rates? pic.twitter.com/bghyVv0A9t
  102. If this happens, we need to go to the root of the problem. Is it too hard? Are they not adequately supported? #ukedchat  https://twitter.com/UKEdSch/status/865289647907364866
  103. @lamaunu1 Look great and give lots of opportunities for learning through play. No reason why homework can't be same - play opps at home #ukedchat
  104. How much time/effort is spent setting, marking, chasing up, monitoring & recording hw by slt & what level of impact does it have? #ukedchat
  105. A6 Look for the patterns that have emerged with h/w. There could be something larger at work than just laziness or incomprehension #ukedchat
  106. A7 for some. They know this will be reported on and parents will react. For others I impact at all. Need another solution for them #UKEdChat
  107. @ukedchat Tracking of homework is important but showing the students you are genuinely interested in their work is vital #ukedchat
  108. @ukedchat Time with parents/carers - scale model of a trench system dug out of insulation board with working lights #UKEdChat
  109. #UKEdChat - Question 8.
What aspects of #EdTech help you set homework tasks, and how do you ensure accessibility? https://t.co/RzE1kxVOwQ
#UKEdChat - Question 8. What aspects of #EdTech help you set homework tasks, and how do you ensure accessibility? pic.twitter.com/RzE1kxVOwQ
  110. #UKEdChat A7 yes a teacher parent equation also puts pressure on child to hand in...but if course that'll work only at Middle school level
  111. When I'm pushed (or push) to set x amount of homework per class per week, guess what - the quality and love goes down... #ukedchat
  112. @ukedchat Yes, there are some great #edtech services that support homework tasks, even Google Forms opens many opportunities #UKEdChat
  113. @UKEdSch A6: I agree with @teacherchalky1 & @Elizabethutch - have high but relational expectations based on chn as individuals/their needs #UKEdChat
  114. @UKEdSch #UKEdChat QR codes (and URL) in the corner which take you to a video with a modelled example, or explaining the task in more detail
  115. @ukedchat A7. Think more to do w/ Ts follow up & sch expectations. Ss in my sch get 1h for not submitting HW. Best submissions ever seen.
  116. @UKEdSch Helps to refresh children's memory, and shows parents expected/taught methods #UKEdChat
  117. #UKEdChat# A8. We have Google classroom and one note ...so it makes this much easier and tacking is phenomenal.
  118. @UKEdSch We had a school send our storytelling resources home, families shared stories on twitter with me and school around chn interests. #ukedchat
  119. A8 Giving them access to padlet or flipgrid to share ideas. Using online tools to engage. For those without access use the library #ukedchat
  120. We have a student dashboard which enables students to access entire lessons anytime, along with their original notes for #revision #ukedchat  https://twitter.com/UKEdSch/status/865292667944620032
  121. A7 - ed tech certainly makes it easier to set homework little and often if you wanted... #ukedchat
  122. @ukedchat Accessibility does. Tracking not so much. Those that do home work does it, those that do not, do not. #Ukedchat
  123. @ukedchat Depends on how much the homework is valued once it has been given in. #Ukedchat
  124. A7 ... and you can check when you want - not a big pile, for e.g. thursday period 4 to remember to collect. #ukedchat
  125. My kids hw challenge. Choice, active learning, parent child interaction, no pressure #ukedchat https://t.co/e9iViUdfBv
My kids hw challenge. Choice, active learning, parent child interaction, no pressure #ukedchat pic.twitter.com/e9iViUdfBv
  126. #UKEdChat - Question 9.
If you were in charge of developing a new homework policy, what regulation would you include? https://t.co/MGv3mNrjOP
#UKEdChat - Question 9. If you were in charge of developing a new homework policy, what regulation would you include? pic.twitter.com/MGv3mNrjOP
  127. @Sfm36 That's great. You should share the document with @UKEDResources so more teachers can use the idea, and develop ideas further? #UKEdChat
  128. A7 - get access to quality online resources, that allow self paced independent learning, that you can check as a teacher. 1/2 #ukedchat
  129. @ukedchat @UKEDResources Not my idea (I'm a parent) but @StBernadettesPC. Well received by parents. As a teacher I love it (but adapt)
  130. @ukedchat Worksheets are unfashionable, but they do help to consolidate grammar and very quickly help T's understand where the gaps are...
  131. We got our children and staff to create Maths Methods videos using @showmeapp which went on the website to support parents #ukedchat
  132. 2/2 A7 so teacher can be 'guide on the side' (really don't like that rerm, but you know what I mean... #ukedchat
  133. @ukedchat A9. Would ensure (secondary) staff collaborate to ensure a sensible amount of homework was being set for each child every time #UKEdChat
  134. @UKEdSch One of the key things that's missing at home is talk and interactions. I'd make oracy a core component #ukedchat
  135. #UKEdChat A9. Would definitely have compulsory reading time scheduled...could be newspaper , articles, books whatever the interest level
  136. A9 CHOICE of task with some easy, some more difficult and variety. Makes is accessible to all #ukedchat
  137. A9 In secondary schools I would add a link from the school library and expect to see evidence of use. #ukedchat
  138. @ukedchat We do 1 grammar lesson/week at KS3 and after teaching a key concept SS complete differentiated consolidation worksheets for homework 1/2
  139. @TGolightly We are sharing a book with S's in the US on padlet. I have not seen S's so keen to write about what they think about a book ever! #ukedchat
  140. @ukedchat The following week we look over them and SS say how confident they are with the concept and either move on or get a booster. 2/2
  141. @ApraRalli I'm with you! Story is such a powerful learning gizmo too so lots of story #ukedchat
  142. @ukedchat They are expected to use acquired knowledge in writing - if not, they look back in grammar book with linked worksheets for consolidation.
  143. @ukedchat Fit for purpose and meaningful tasks only which aid progress #Ukedchat
