#UKEdChat - Question 1 Do/Should schools have a responsibility for teachers health? If so, how can they achieve this? pic.twitter.com/ssAtIZtDVb
  3. @ukedchat A1. Schools are communities, whose responsibility it is to look out for each other - no matter of status within the community #UKEdChat
  4. @ukedchat A1 I think they should, always look after your staff. Try to offer support wherever needed #UKEdChat
  5. @ukedchat Yes definitely. Headteachers should recognise that certain times of year can be particularly high stress for staff.
  6. @ukedchat Certainly. Staff support such as wellbeing retreat days, option to sign up with health services such as Nuffield Health. #ukedchat
  7. @ukedchat They should build a culture in school where is it ok to talk about teacher health and wellbeing. Head needs to be approachable.
  8. @ukedchat Find out the cause of the health problem. If stress find ways to reduce workload or ease deadlines? #UKEdChat
  9. @lauthorne @ukedchat I don't think it's necessarily down to the school leaders. It's down to everyone within the community to understand the pressures #ukedchat
  10. @ukedchat Yes it's important to keep health of staff in the forefront of your mind. This is vital as they are in the schools most important asset
  11. @digicoled @ukedchat Agreed, slt need to ensure they what they are asking for is manageable And realistic #ukedchat
  12. @ey_inspiration1 @ukedchat But, in fairness, where are the management getting their pressures from? #ukedchat Higher up in the chain!
  13. #UKEdChat A1 Yes, schools have a responsibility to staff- expectations shd be manageable and of benefit to students.Tired Ts are ineffective
  14. If you are joining #UKEdChat, make sure you use the hashtag in your tweets.
  15. @ukedchat A teacher with low health and wellbeing, experiencing high levels of stress will not perform to the best of their ability. #ukedchat
  16. @digicoled @lauthorne @ukedchat Absolutely. Having a healthy support network from all corners of the school can make a big difference to teacher wellbeing #ukedchat
  17. @goodman_ang Perhaps formal expectations should be placed on all schools? #ukedchat
  18. @digicoled @ukedchat Agreed but not always! Some slt ask for more and more but they must not forget their staffs wellbeing. Depends on the leadership team
  19. @digicoled Tricky though - the minute something becomes formal it generates paperwork for someone #UKEdChat
  20. @digicoled @ukedchat Agree. But first senior management need to be willing to discuss teacher health. The rest of the school community will follow suit.
  21. #UKEdChat Y in the same way that all employers are responsible for not asking more than is manageable for healthy human beings.
  22. @ukedchat Definitely. We expect pupils to support their peers but it is rarely filtered through the staff hierarchy #ukedchat
  23. #UKEdChat - Question 2
Could schools support the leisure activities of their staff? Why? How? https://t.co/rajnjA36v1
#UKEdChat - Question 2 Could schools support the leisure activities of their staff? Why? How? pic.twitter.com/rajnjA36v1
  24. Are you saying that you have experience where school leaders are not prepared to talk about the issue? #ukedchat  https://twitter.com/lauthorne/status/872893295969566720
  25. @ukedchat How? u Rescheduling activities such as report writing to times that are not already busy #ukedchat
  26. @ukedchat But added complexity is that all people have different tolerances for stress. Some love working every hour in the day! #ukedchat
  27. #UKEdChat A2 Some LAs have rewards at restaurants, gyms etc for employees - make sure staff are aware.
  28. @stuartrgdyer OK, so it’s a case of recognising that all staff work differently #UKEdChat How can this be factored into a whole school strategy then?
  29. @ukedchat How?Commitment to consideration and consultation around workload impact before a new initiative is introduced #ukedchat
  30. #UKEdChat staff welfare and making people aware of it will allow us to help students in turn. Awareness means assistance for all.
  31. @UKEdSch #ukedchat - A1 appoint a wellbeing lead Aim to create a community where staff support one another. SMT lead by example.
  32. @ukedchat How? Do staff feel that they have autonomy, or do they feel micromanaged? Looking closely at staff trust #ukedchat
  33. Whole-school wellbeing is crucial. It directly affects success & progress in pupils, why would it be different for teachers? #ukedchat
  34. #UKEdChat A2 During some INSET days we pay for staff massage sessions! Does that count??
  35. @ukedchat Yes schools could and should, but also recognise that different leisure activities will appeal to different staff #ukedchat
  36. @ukedchat How? If there are changes happening at the school, management need to engage staff during this period. Are they clearly informed? #ukedchst
  37. #UKEdChat a school I used to work at would have a health and welfare week once a term and it was effective - improving relationships too.
  38. @kegsgeog @digicoled Sadly, yes! But you can’t blame leaders for working in that type of system #ukedchat
  39. @ukedchat Have a staff room which allows staff to switch off and unwind
  40. #UKEdChat is the best wellbeing approach to shut shool earlyish and tell everyone to go home to not mark anything ?
  41. A2- Staff inset days could be staff adventure days. Going out to various outdoor venues, for a walk or games for team building #ukedchat
  42. @UKEdSch Providing afterschool opportunities for staff to engage in relaxing clubs such as aerobics, yoga, meditation #ukedchat
  43. @ukedchat A2 Yes. Leisure activities usually help improve Health. @chrisbourne2win used to organise a staff running club #UKEdChat
  44. @stuartrgdyer Again, suppose it's down to how you work. My husband's sch do late night Thurs so you don't need to take work home - no obligation #UKEdChat
  45. @stuartrgdyer That can cause stress within itself #ukedchat Or move the marking to their home! :-(
  46. @ukedchat A2 When possible we have had after school Badminton for staff. Make time once a week/month/term to do something together #UKEdChat
  47. @WilliamsMl82 #ukedchat we've just had a wellbeing week coordinated by @nicolabeavis1 - was great for pupils, staff and parents
  48. @ukedchat Promote clubs or leisure opportunities in the local area. Maintain links with leisure facilities and update staff when offers appear
  49. @digicoled @ukedchat Too much pressure and too little time in all areas of school life - curriculum, CPD, assessment, pupils' well being etc
  50. @ukedchat Making it easy for staff to participate in enjoyable physical activities. Having a good social secretary and a budget. #ukedchat
  51. @athrawe5 @nicolabeavis1 #ukedchat I think it is so important and it is great you do that. I believe it should be a social experience.
  52. @ukedchat Providing guidance on reasonable working hours and expectations. Teaching staff the basics of getting good sleep. #ukedchat
  53. #UKEdChat - Question 3
How can teachers incorporate exercise into a time-pressured day? https://t.co/m2lGyXVgua
    #UKEdChat - Question 3 How can teachers incorporate exercise into a time-pressured day? pic.twitter.com/m2lGyXVgua
  54. @ukedchat A3 Some of my colleagues get up early to exercise. I try to do something every other day as soon as I get home #UKEdChat
  55. A3- A walk around the block after a long day. Staff running club, a daily mile challenge. Staff briefing- staff share exercises #ukedchat
  56. #ukedchat A3 I find that really difficult. I try to go for an evening walk a couple of times a week, and walk at the weekend.
  57. #UKEdChat A3 - best way is to schedule it, otherwise very easy to lose it in busyness!
  58. #ukedchat Q3, it could be incorporated in the school day with the students. Or as Enrichment. It doesn't have to be strenuous either.
  59. A3: This is an interesting article on ways to squeeze exercise into a busy schedule (not just for women!):  http://ow.ly/xaZp30cra4E  #ukedchat
  60. Be the change. Help us to de-stigmatize mental health in schools and make a difference!  http://www.youhue.com/  #mentalhealth #ukedchat
  61. @ukedchat A3: join in activities at break times. Allow yourself time between the end of school and evening marking to exercise #UKEdChat
  62. @ukedchat A3: I've even started parking further away from schools to get a bit more exercise in #UKEdChat
  63. #ukedchat A3. Join a club or exercise with someone else so it is harder to duck out of.
  64. @chrisbourne2win But what about the coffee? WILL SOMEONE THINK ABOUT THE COFFEE - LOL #ukedchat ;0)
  65. @UKEdSch A1 Yes schools have a duty of care to all staff. For teachers, take on board recommendations from the ASCL workload report. #UKEdChat
  66. #ukedchat start road biking. Need to keep regular rides to maintain bike fitness! 🚲🚲🚲
  67. @UnioByHarness @WilliamsMl82 @nicolabeavis1 This was the first time. Bt we're planning to do it at least bi-annually. Was an amazing week. Good fr parental engagement as well #ukedchat
  68. @ukedchat Oh - well I don't do any except reaching for the remote and the green pen #ukedchat
  69. @ukedchat a bit of resistance training if you walking against the wind! #UKEdChat
  70. @ukedchat Even during busy times expect there to be a balance (work/life)! Open dialogue between everyone (culture) & realistic expectations #UKEdChat
  71. A3. I was at at school where a teacher taught morning yoga classes x2 week FO FREE #ukedchat
  72. A3: Cycling/walking to or from school can be a good way to squeeze in some extra exercise into your day. Especially in the summer! #UKEdChat
  73. #ukedchat at the end of the day the time restraints are there though. Especially if you have a family as I do.
  74. #ukedchat A3: many ways you can fit exercise in - walking SLT meetings, stretches between classes, wake pupils and you up with star jumps.
  75. @digicoled @ukedchat Prioritising, & valuing the importance of, creating a supportive ethos where all staff know there is someone trustworthy they can approach
  76. @chrisbourne2win And a good opportunity to unwind by listening to some music or a good podcast ;0) #ukedchat
  77. @ukedchat Riding my road bike with a friend at the weekend and once/twice in the week. Fresh air, great scenery and good chat (and cake!)
  78. @WilliamsMl82 Agree, but you're no good to your family if you become unhealthy and ill :-/ #UKEdChat
  79. @ukedchat A3: early morning or evening exercise! Make it habitual not just a one off #UKEdChat
  80. @UKEdSch A2 Yes to promote various leisure activities. Must be choice. One person's idea of leisure maybe another person's idea of torture.#UKEdChat
  81. Perhaps we should start local teachers cycle riding clubs #ukedchat A mix of schools/phases etc. A great social activity...potentially.  https://twitter.com/debkeys/status/872898136485900289
  82. @m13uva1a Oh wow, this sounds awesome! Did it have good take-up from teachers? #ukedchat
  83. #UKEdChat - Question 4
When time is an issue, how can teachers ensure they and their family get a balanced diet? https://t.co/DJ4cXayIym
#UKEdChat - Question 4 When time is an issue, how can teachers ensure they and their family get a balanced diet? pic.twitter.com/DJ4cXayIym
  84. @ukedchat Exercise is so important in our job to unwind. It can be a short 15 min wake up yoga session or half hour run straight fm school.
  85. @ukedchat A3 I once worked at a school where we had a lunchtime walking group - worked well for fitness, peer support and collaboration. #ukedchat
  86. @ukedchat A4 Shop wisely. The age old debate about junk food being cheaper than healthy always springs to mind #UKEdChat
  87. #ukedchat then that would boil down to workload reduction. Unless you exercise with students or as Enrichment, it is hard to find time.
  88. @ukedchat A4 Plenty of websites/apps share quick and healthy recipes. Moderation is important #UKEdChat
  89. @ukedchat I think planning is key here. Plan ahead, use online shopping, and plan the family menu for the week #ukedchat Involve all in the family.
  90. @UKEdSch A3 I make sure I go to 2 gym classes regularly and I also have a running buddy which helps me. Think of all the endorphins too! #UKEdChat
  91. @ukedchat Again down to reasonable demands by slt. Saying enough is enough go home. #ukedchat
  92. @ukedchat A4: make batches of food when have time and freeze, slow cooker is great in the winter - salad takes 5 mins! :-) #ukedchat
  93. @ukedchat eating supermarket pizza and marking as I read this!
  94. #ukedchat A4 Make extra and freeze. Slow cooker - put food in before work and leave to it.
  95. A great example to us all ;0) #ukedchat But, in the ideal world, what would you do to improve diet?  https://twitter.com/WRoberts3/status/872899361465880577
  96. #ukedchat Q4, I have a support network at home. I think it would be to manage time well for ex. meals are prepped.
  97. @chrisbourne2win And NEVER shop for food on an empty stomach! Too much temptation. Shop when full #ukedchat
  98. #ukedchat A4. Keep it simple and fresh. Involve kids as soon as they are old enough.
  99. A4 Shop smart not cheap. Do so after any physical activity whilst the endorphin's are present #ukedchat
  100. @chrisbourne2win Ohh this is a GREAT shout! Like the reverse of the mantra never to do the food shop hungry, or you'll buy junk! (guilty) #UKEdChat
  101. #ukedchat I make batch stews, veggie lasagnes, spag bols, etc that I freeze and use over time. I prep salads on an evening when boys in bed.
  102. @ukedchat fruit bowls in the staffroom. Very cheap way for management to make nice with staff, too!
  103. @ukedchat Good idea. I also love the fact that my local bike club means I meet and chat with a really diverse group of people. It's invigorating.
  104. @ukedchat A4 When I shop I try to think of meals I will make in the week. It's easy to cook a healthy meal in 30 minutes when time is ltd. #UKEdChat
  105. #ukedchat A4. Be vigilant around danger times: report writing and coming to the end of term! Plan for simple, easy to make, fresh food.
  106. #UKEdChat - Question 5
Which hobbies lend themselves to the lifestyle of a teacher? https://t.co/kRaAi7ETuP
#UKEdChat - Question 5 Which hobbies lend themselves to the lifestyle of a teacher? pic.twitter.com/kRaAi7ETuP
  107. #ukedchat A5 Running - anytime, anywhere, free and in the fresh air
  108. #ukedchat Q5, I would have to say Yoga, football as it can be done with a small team in school and the gym. I love swimming.
  109. @UKEdSch @ukedchat A5: writing, blogging and journalism proves to be a great source of wellbeing for myself #UKEdChat
  110. #ukedchat A5 I will also say road-biking but I am biased. Significant time needed but great time for thinking.
  111. @UKEdSch A5: Reading - you can slip away into another world, even for just a twenty minute breaktime! #ukedchat
  112. #ukedchat A5 I would try and avoid computer based hobbies - too easy to get sucked into doing that little bit more work!
  113. A5 Reading certainly. Whether that outdoors or indoors. #ukedchat
  114. @ukedchat I'd vote for fruit, no more sugar rushes needed in my classroom #UKEdChat
  115. #UKEdChat - Question 6
We joined the professional knowledge that it is stressful and impacts on our health. Should we complain now? https://t.co/E6jCPam27l
#UKEdChat - Question 6 We joined the professional knowledge that it is stressful and impacts on our health. Should we complain now? pic.twitter.com/E6jCPam27l
  116. @ukedchat A6. Complain? No. But it is important to take a step back regularly, switch off, and enjoy life away from the school environment. #UKEdChat
  117. @ukedchat A6. Complain? It's always easy to complain. Many of us enjoy teaching. It's usually all the rubbish that surrounds it! #UKEdChat
  118. #ukedchat well I am just starting my teaching journey but have been in ed for 10 years. For me,it is all worth it.The students are worth it.
  119. @ukedchat A6. Complain? It's down to each individual to look after themselves and enjoy the community around them. Community is key #UKEdChat
  120. @ukedchat A6 Don't complain. Make a change and take positive steps forward. Too many people talk but don't walk #UKEdChat
  121. @ukedchat Within a balanced system that considers teacher #wellbeing, most hobbies are accessible. Running is my preference! #ukedchat
  122. @ukedchat A6 In a book about leadership Dale Carnegie "don't criticise, condemn or complain." Find/think of solutions for issues. #UKEdChat
  123. @ukedchat no, though pizza is dangerously close to becoming a hobby now school's back in!
  124. @ukedchat At times it's difficult not to - in fact it is quite therapeutic but it can't spiral into all of teaching is stressful. #ukedchat
  125. We joined the professional in the knowledge that it is stressful and impacts on our health. Should we complain now? #ukedchat
  126. @ukedchat I used to send them out for three laps of the playground in between lessons or activities. They'd come back refreshed and ready.
  127. @ukedchat A6: yes, if we want to. Airing frustration is part of coping for many of us. Just not at 8:30 in the office, please! #UKEdChat
  128. @UKEdSch A5 I find reading, running and yoga good for me. My yoga teacher said she meets quite a few teachers in her classes #UKEdChat
  129. We've reached the finish line. It's 9pm.
