Good evening. It's 8pm, and time for another #UKEdChat. Tonight: Teaching Resilience 6 questions will follow. Enjoy & chat :-) pic.twitter.com/m7j1SM5tb3
  5. #UKEdChat - Question 1a.
What does the term 'resilience' mean to you?
What is your definition of resilience? https://t.co/PzcgZN4amx
#UKEdChat - Question 1a. What does the term 'resilience' mean to you? What is your definition of resilience? pic.twitter.com/PzcgZN4amx
  6. Hoping I can keep up with this chat...I will be resilient #ukedchat
  7. @ukedchat #UKEdChat My definition of resilience? A bit of a cliche, but being able to bounce back from adversity
  8. For me, it means not giving up. Having the skills to cope with new or difficult situations & to be emotionally tough #UKEdChat  https://twitter.com/ukedsch/status/890648347387637760
  9. @UKEdSch Resilience is not a set of attributes someone is born with, but a result of their interactions, relationships&supportive context #ukedchat
  10. @chevalier_cygne @dailydenouement Just add #UKEdChat in your replies, and follow the discussion. Enjoy and chat :-)
  11. @dailydenouement My sister graduated from LIPA last year. I spent a bit of time in Liverpool - loved it! #ukedchat
  12. #Ukedchat I talk about emotional resilience, because it's when our emotions overwhelm us we lose the ability to cope: so 1/2
  13. A1 When I think of resilience I think of the word "relentless." To me it means to keep going forward no matter what happens. #ukedchat
  14. Resilience is not just about overcoming adversity-but also challenging aspects of that adversity-equity based model @bb_resilience #ukedchat
  15. @UKEdSch A1 My definition of resilience is having the 'internal reserves' to keep going in the face of set backs #ukedchat
  16. #UKEdChat - Question 1b.
How important is it to teach resilience to our students, and why?
(remember to include #UKEdChat in your response) https://t.co/pjGiSzOMXk
#UKEdChat - Question 1b. How important is it to teach resilience to our students, and why? (remember to include #UKEdChat in your response) pic.twitter.com/pjGiSzOMXk
  17. @chevalier_cygne @ukedchat Great to have you join us! Just look for the qus, join in with any discussions & always use the #ukedchat hashtag.
  18. #ukedchat resilience is something we are born with. Look at babies learning to ealk!
  19. A1b: It's so important to teach students to be resilient! Mistakes are how we learn, and we are always learning! #failfoward #ukedchat
  20. @rondelle10_b @UKEdSch I like that. So eloquently put. #UKEdChat What should the internet reserves include?
  21. 1b not sure it can be taught - can be learned & needs to be nurtured through the culture of the #school. #Ukedchat
  22. @chrysalisleader But I think giving up after trying still teaches you a lot, so you still know more than before you tried! #ukedchat
  23. #ukedchat resilience is to do with knowing your resources: emotional, mental, physical, social to help u to help yourself.  https://twitter.com/UKEdSch/status/890648347387637760
  24. resilience framework (Hart et al) available through @bb_resilience has very useful collection of aspects from empirical research #ukedchat
  25. Research says resilience comes from reflecting on experience & learning so you emerge stronger than before (Kelleher/Patterson)#Ukedchat
  26. @ukedchat #UKEdChat twitter is fast and furious,I will endeavour to add to this chat without feeling a failure at my lack of IT finesse
  27. @UKEdSch #UKEdChat we have innate resilience, look at babies learning to walj!
  28. @cerasmusteach #ukedchat its about the ability to deal with different situations, the ability to not only cope, but to be able to embrace difficulties a1
  29. Yes. I think we are in danger of missing point if we try to teach it. Nurturing or coaching seems far more realistic #UKEdChat  https://twitter.com/chrysalisleader/status/890649969933373440
  30. @ukedchat #ukedchat without resilience they will never realise their full potential and what they are truly capable of.
  31. #UKEdChat - Question 2.
How is it possible to teach the fundamental aspects of resilience?
What activities / strategies are evident? https://t.co/cuKo4dsDUk
#UKEdChat - Question 2. How is it possible to teach the fundamental aspects of resilience? What activities / strategies are evident? pic.twitter.com/cuKo4dsDUk
  32. @UKEdSch Emotional and physical resilience as well as perseverance are key skills for adults to model. #ukedchat
  33. @chrysalisleader I think you can demonstrate and encourage the skills behind resilience though #UKEdChat
  34. @chrysalisleader #Ukedchat and so rewarding when we see our pupils showing ER, we teach Mindfulness in Y4 and Y6, pupils identify so well.
  35. So if any of our followers fancy joining in, we're discussing resilience tonight. Just follow the hashtag & jump in any time. #UKEdChat
  36. @UKEdSch A1 it's important to teach them resilience wen answering exam questions as they can often give up #ukedchat
  37. A2 This is where reflection comes in. Ss document work throughout the year and reflect to better understand their own learning. #ukedchat
  38. @UKEdSch #ukedchat resilience is not being afraid to fail, failing and then having the courage and evaluative skills to have better go.
  39. @UKEdSch Can I be less positive than everyone here? It is SO over-used like it's ANOTHER box to tick! #UKEdChat
  40. @UKEdSch Resilience is our true nature, b4 we learn judgement (partic of ourselves) #UKEdChat
  41. A2 We also chose the word "relentless" and embedded it throughout the school-in lessons, assemblies, on the walls, with parents... #ukedchat
  42. @shirleydrummon5 We're not judging you, and admire your resilience in trying to keep up #UKEdChat 😊
  43. Can we 'teach' resilience artificially?we can build understanding of resilience&introduce factors that promote resilience 2 school #ukedchat
  44. @chrysalisleader #Ukedchat @cerasmusteach culture of school is key but curriculum needs to support this too, and all staff being on board.
  45. @digicoled @UKEdSch Thank you. IMO, 'internal reserves' relates to our mental health, emotional state and our inner dialogue #ukedchat
  46. @MrPatelsawesome @UKEdSch But can be learned #Ukedchat attached result of 9-month workshop - but with adults - ldrs in school https://t.co/zXILOni6Qp
@MrPatelsawesome @UKEdSch But can be learned #Ukedchat attached result of 9-month workshop - but with adults - ldrs in school pic.twitter.com/zXILOni6Qp
  47. @MrPatelsawesome @UKEdSch Indeed, that's what we're exploring. I think we can show pupils the tools they need to build their own resilience #UKEdChat Exams, for e.g.
  48. Of course. Hard not to be negative/cynical when the edu world is awash with initiative-itis. #ukedchat  https://twitter.com/wardywardster/status/890651182556893187
  49. @WardyWardster @UKEdSch I tend to agree. A bit of a fad perhaps. But there are some key skills worthy of passing onto students #UKEdChat No tick boxes required.
  50. Playing devils advocate, but evolutionarily, we learned to walk to hunt for food #UKEdChat hence 'survival'.  https://twitter.com/AnniPoole/status/890651749740036096
  51. @digicoled @WardyWardster @UKEdSch I agree. As a staff, we read a lot before developing how to nurture this in our school. It comes back to your Ss and their needs. #ukedchat
  52. @ukedchat I find it really hard to define. I think it is often quite slippery even when it is being explicitly 'taught'. #UKEdChat
  53. Please remember to include the #UKEdChat in your responses, so we can all see the magic you are sharing 😁  https://twitter.com/shirleydrummon5/status/890652366743064576
  54. @ukedchat #Ukedchat we can all survive. IMO resilience enables & requires us to be who we are - not to be what someone else thinks we should be
  55. @ukedchat Hearing it nowadays immediately sets me on edge. I immediately wonder, 'resilience against what?' #UKEdChat
  56. @Jessicaraealt Is there a case for more appreciation of the here and now in education?Less relentless striving towards a predetermined target?#ukedchat
  57. @Jessicaraealt @WardyWardster @UKEdSch Yes. Jumping on band-wagons is dangerous. Educators need to have a sound understanding of concepts before advocating about them #UKEdChat
  58. @ukedchat Apparently the etymology is re+saillance i.e. re-jumping! I like the idea that it's about movement, not being unyielding #UKEdChat
  59. #UKEdChat - Question 3.
Share specific examples where you have admired resilient behaviours of your students.
What happened? https://t.co/UMFXNF1IVH
#UKEdChat - Question 3. Share specific examples where you have admired resilient behaviours of your students. What happened? pic.twitter.com/UMFXNF1IVH
  60. @digicoled @Jessicaraealt @WardyWardster @UKEdSch Absolutely. And schools need to provide sufficient time to gain a sound understanding #ukedchat
  61. @UKEdSch @rondelle10_b #UKEdChat Q2. @rondelle10_b @UKEdSch Through modelling???. Teacher responses to real-life incidences which arise.
  62. @ukedchat I don't think it deserves the prominence it's currently given. I think good Ts teach and model resilience all the time anyway. #UKEdChat
  63. This chat is also making me think about the importance of understanding student needs. Support should be based on need, right? #ukedchat
  64. @UKEdSch #ukedchat Y4 tennis finals 2 weeks ago...pupil losing, cried...total melt down on court..she did a 'paws b'!! And won!
  65. @ukedchat I think it's part of a discourse that implies that today's young people 'need more resilience' i.e. are uniquely soft. I disagree #UKEdChat
  66. @digicoled @Jessicaraealt @WardyWardster @UKEdSch #ukedchat - residence is not a new thing --- teacher have been teaching it for years ... is it just a fad ? Or something we should try and .
  67. @chevalier_cygne The system? I agree with your sentiment here, and we need to be careful that we're not resilient against bullying etc #UKEdChat
  68. @ukedchat Shaking things off, bounching back, accepting own mistakes and those of others, accepting and acknowding responsibility for self #ukedchat
  69. @UKEdSch most effective ways2build resilience in students is (I believe)2establish trusting&meaningful relationships&experiences of success #ukedchat
  70. @ukedchat Exploration, providing foundations where things might go wrong in scenarios to develop that positive mindset and resilience #ukedchat
  71. @UKEdSch To what extent does the school system allow for these opportunities with a focus on targets rather than meaningful interaction? #ukedchat
  72. @ukedchat Don't think we need conscious strategies. More about recognising and celebrating resilience young people already have. #UKEdChat
  73. @ukedchat So important. I notice days when I am not very resilient as an adult and I need the tools to stop thinking over things and get on #ukedchat
  74. @UKEdSch A3 When my set 8 of 8 GCSE Ss struggled to complete 6 mark exam Qs. Used @Jivespin's hexagon strategy to help them break Q down #ukedchat
  75. @UKEdSch Starting conversation about what resilience is& strengths based approach2what is already working well (systemically)=good start #ukedchat
  76. @ukedchat Exactly. And nobody should have to be resilient against e.g. economic precarity (though it's an increasing inevitability...) #UKEdChat
  77. @ukedchat #ukedchat Resilience was shown when a student kept losing at table tennis but kept on being positive and working to improve her game.
  78. @UKEdSch Using some free resources from Academic Resilience Approach from @bb_resilience to set up focus groups/zap sessions on resilience #ukedchat
  79. I think it's important to model resilience as an adult too... show that things are hard but you can get through it with grit. #UKEdChat
  80. @Jessicaraealt Everything in education should come down to this ! The people we serve #ukedchat
  81. @UKEdSch A3 Using visuals meant that they were able to at least try, answer Qs & build confidence over time... #ukedchat
  82. @ukedchat #ukedchat Resilience is watching a dyslexic student who hates to write, produce 3 pages on fishing and then rewriting to edit errors.
  83. curious about how many r aware of the Academic Resilience Approach @bb_resilience (whole school) already thriving in many schools #ukedchat
  84. We do a lot of critique and redrafting from reception onwards so they know resilience is part of the process #UKEdChat
  85. @JadeFahie #ukedchat - I openly tell pupils about my struggles and how I overcame them - the more you give the more you get :)
  86. #UKEdChat - Question 4.
Where does resilience fit in with the important issue of mental health?
(Remember to include #UKEdChat in responses) https://t.co/PoAa8UW0jC
#UKEdChat - Question 4. Where does resilience fit in with the important issue of mental health? (Remember to include #UKEdChat in responses) pic.twitter.com/PoAa8UW0jC
  87. @ukedchat #ukedchat Resilience is building a culture where students start to tell each other it's ok to fail but then you have to try again.
  88. @chevalier_cygne @ukedchat Watched the film 'Hidden Figures' recently. A great example of stunning resilience against adversity. #UKEdChat  https://youtu.be/RK8xHq6dfAo
  89. @ukedchat So, often. Lots of pupils have very little where as others are incredibly resilient. They stand up for what they believe! Proud #ukedchat
  90. @ukedchat It's got to be about trust and about modelling. Teaching modelling that vulnerability is OK and won't be punished #UKEdChat
  91. #ukedchat A3 Some resilient behaviours children are embarrassed to share... they just 'get on' and don't want public praise.
  92. @ukedchat #UKedchat both start with wellbeing. You can't separate body & mind. 'No health without mental health' stated in 1950s: still true
  93. I think it's teaching strategies for resilience to ensure mental health is maintained & being honest that it won't always be easy #UKEdChat
  94. @Jessicaraealt Take a look at free resources from @bb_resilience -a whole school resilience approach specifically2support disadvantaged students #ukedchat
  95. @ukedchat And thinking about how different ch. cope. I was/am a perfectionist so would never stop til I got it perfect; is that healthy? #UKEdChat
  96. @ukedchat Mental health profile needs to be raised, children need to develop the bounce back and take responsibility. They come hand in hand #ukedchat
  97. @JadeFahie #UKEdchat Grit taken a bit of a battering of late in academic circles.Initial research results have yet to be replicated despite attempts
  98. @ukedchat #ukedchat it's potentially the heart of mental health: it enables us to embrace failure & imperfections, then moving forward, trying again.
  99. @UKEdSch It is the small acts of multiple individuals in the school system(from cleaner to head) who shape&promote resilience in students #ukedchat
  100. @chevalier_cygne @ukedchat No, sadly not. No such thing as perfection, so setting up to fail & never feel you're good enough (I've been there too) #UKedchat
  101. @UKEdSch I have a real issue with using the term 'resilience' to describe the vast majority of pupils and their approach to learning #UKEdChat
  102. Q4 has me wondering about resilience of educators and mental health....I think it's a balancing act. #ukedchat
  103. @UKEdSch @rondelle10_b #UKEdChat Q3.Too many to share. I've worked really hard to ensure a " can do" attitude/culture to learning.
  104. @ukedchat Good for general mental wellbeing, but important to remember you can't resilience your way out of serious MH conditions #UKEdChat
  105. @UKEdSch @rondelle10_b #UKEdChat so much so once I overheard a child telling another pupil don't say I can't do it, say "I CAN DO IT".
  106. @ukedchat I worry that kids with MH conditions might be sidelined/implicitly blamed for not being 'resilient' enough #UKEdChat
  107. @Jessicaraealt Yes, the questions are set to get you thinking and challenge own ideas. #UKEdChat Mental health and resilience so closely related IMHO.
  108. @chevalier_cygne @ukedchat Absolutely. You're on great form tonight in #UKEdChat A chicken and egg scenario. Sort the MH out first, then consider resilience.
  109. #ukedchat in order to make informed choices, to enable resilience , Ss need to be literate about emotional & MH: vital it is in curric.  https://twitter.com/UKEdSch/status/890655799302774784
  110. @ukedchat Mental health=highly correlated with good educational outcome-'resilient schools'may be highly effective preventative intervention #ukedchat
  111. Please remember to share the #UKEdChat in your tweet, so others can be included in your replies 😁  https://twitter.com/Teachingpundit/status/890657753945047040
  112. @ukedchat @bb_resilience focus on resilience building across whole school for students most at risk of current/future mental health issues #ukedchat
  113. @cerasmusteach So, we need to make sure MH is in order before starting to consider resilience? #UKEdChat
  114. #UKEdChat - Question 5.
How can you demonstrate to students why resilience is important?
What examples can be used? https://t.co/O9HC6lQSPr
#UKEdChat - Question 5. How can you demonstrate to students why resilience is important? What examples can be used? pic.twitter.com/O9HC6lQSPr
  115. @ukedchat Where does school fit in with the issue of mental health? How much are schools doing to promote/model positive mental health #ukedchat
  116. @UKEdSch #ukedchat has to be modelled by parents, teachers etc. Also, it needs to be inherent in the words we use every day a2
  117. A5 As someone said earlier, this is what teachers do naturally. Teachers are some of the most resilient people I know! #ukedchat
  118. @UKEdSch It's got to start with practitioner resilience-I see a profession on its knees that needs greater support #ukedchat
  119. Tonight's @ukedchat is 'teaching resilience' Here's a little warm-up from @DavidDidau @Nick_J_Rose 's SUPERB 'What every teacher needs...' pic.twitter.com/s5pry8aaWF
  120. @cerasmusteach Indeed. So how do we support those who were not given those valuable skills and tools in early life? #UKEdChat
  121. @bobharrisonset @UKEdSch @renebarrett Finding the positives in every step you take - not being afraid to make mistakes... & learning from them! #ukedchat
  122. @UKEdSch Staff demonstrate resilience through taking care of 'basics' - sleep, work life balance, good food, opportunities for prof dev #ukedchat
  123. Teaching it through assemblies as well... not wasting any chance to teach resilience and link it to wellbeing #UKEdChat
  124. @chrysalisleader @ukedchat Exactly. But my attitude would have been really pleasing to some teachers - not giving up! Perfect resilience! #UKEdChat
  125. @UKEdSch Staff's interaction with each other (collaboration, positivity, asset based approach, empathy) can model resilience 2 young people #ukedchat
  126. Is it just me, or is #UKEdChat just flying by tonight? Great input. Still time to join the chat. Click on the hashtag :-)
  127. @ukedchat #UKedchat Agreed. The idea that resilience means never giving up is leads people to work themselves into the ground
  128. @UKEdSch In my prof exp - bringing in speakers who can demonstrate their own exp overcoming and challenging adversity is inspirational #ukedchat
  129. @ukedchat and it shouldn't be positioned as school's deficit - much is being asked of schools already without sufficient funding/reosurces #ukedchat
  130. @ukedchat @cerasmusteach #UKedchat do our best to repair the damage by accepting them as they are, unconditionally, so ultimately they can love themselves #UKedcha
  131. @chrysalisleader @ukedchat I think not giving up can take many forms... it may mean a different path from what you first thought.
  132. #UKEdChat - Question 6.
Finally, the resilience of teachers. How resilient are you, and what motivates that resilience? https://t.co/EaEmWedRLy
#UKEdChat - Question 6. Finally, the resilience of teachers. How resilient are you, and what motivates that resilience? pic.twitter.com/EaEmWedRLy
  133. @ukedchat Also about knowing how to navigate their way to resources to sustain their resilience/wellbeing as @MichaelUngarPhD research shows
  134. Share your own and other students experiences in assemblies, makes #resilience stories seem more real and achievable #UKEdChat
  135. @ukedchat Still banging the drum: it starts with well-being. #UKedchat #teacher5aday. using energy productively & understanding self https://t.co/JS40tGpzSB
@ukedchat Still banging the drum: it starts with well-being. #UKedchat #teacher5aday. using energy productively & understanding self pic.twitter.com/JS40tGpzSB
  136. @ukedchat @UKEdSch E.g. I had good experiences bringing in sky sports living for sport ambassadors
  137. Resilience also about enabling young people2navigate their way2the resources, services&support they will need-see @MichaelUngarPhD #ukedchat
  138. A6 The resilience of my Ss keeps me going, even now that I'm on the #edtech side of the game. #ukedchat
  139. @ukedchat I think I am quite resilient and think skinned but when something gets to me, I need to talk it through and organise my thinking #ukedchat
  140. I've become more resilient over past 5yrs teaching-experiencing different things and how to deal with it in- learning all the time #UKEdChat
  141. OK - Concluding thoughts folks? Anything you'll take away from this #UKEdChat session about teaching resilience?
  142. @ukedchat Showing our human side. Talking about personal experiences, showing empathy & sympathy - relate to them. We are their role models #ukedchat
  143. @UKEdSch @rondelle10_b #UKEdChat Developing resilience almost requires you to exercise mental well-being for you adapt to challenging situations.
  144. BOOM! It's 9pm - Time goes fast - Another #UKEdChat now concluded.

  145. @ukedchat If we're serious about building student resilience-we have2tackle practitioner resilience-staff also need nurturing #ukedchat https://t.co/GXz0iI6vGs
    @ukedchat If we're serious about building student resilience-we have2tackle practitioner resilience-staff also need nurturing #ukedchat pic.twitter.com/GXz0iI6vGs
  146. Got me thinking about the relationship between resilience and engagement - which is why teachers love @PenpalSchools! #globaled #ukedchat
  147. @ukedchat School systems need to come away from target driven cultures of accountability and performativity if they want to build resilience #ukedchat
  148. @ukcreativeed @ukedchat #UKedchat indeed. Everyone says it's important but few go out of their way proactively to build it - which is possible.
  149. @ukedchat Resilience isn't about coping in spite of odds-it's about creating&sustaining protective factors that decrease & negate adversity #ukedchat
  150. @ukedchat Children need to feel secure in the knowledge that it is better to try and possibly fail than not try at all...schools can facilitate this
  151. We hope that you made some great connections through talking on #ukedchat . Remember to follow and follow back to continue building PLN :-)
  152. Thanks for a great chat everyone! Love to connect w/ educators across the pond! #UKEdChat
  153. @chrysalisleader @digicoled @UKEdSch Absolutely! My own resilience levels are directly linked to the amount of sleep that I have #ukedchat
  154. @cerasmusteach vital that it IS the curriculum. Curriculum shouldn't just be fact list but an approach to learning rooted in values #ukedchat
  155. @UKEdSch Energy stored per unit volume when a material is deformed elastically. It's important not to plastically deform students. #UKEdChat #physics
  156. @UKEdSch Extremely important so they can develop an understanding that it is OK to 'fail', but how we bounce and back that counts #UKEdChat
  157. @ukcreativeed @ukedchat So much can be achieved if the language of learning emphasises that +mental & wellbeing is as important as getting good grades.
  158. @UKEdSch We model a Passport to Excellence to encourage and track engagement in wider school community, e.g. trips, clubs, productions #UKEdChat
  159. @ukedchat #UKEdChat missed it! Summer holiday 🕐! Check out SMART MOVES resilience excellent evidence based scheme of work for developing resilience
  160. @UKEdSch @rondelle10_b #UKEdChat Pretty resilient.   My faith, family and friends motivating factors.
  161. @ukedchat I know it's important that, in our examples of resilience, we don't stray into using disabled people as 'inspiration porn' #UKEdChat
  162. @ukedchat "Look how much this person has overcome!" shouldn't turn into "... and therefore you should overcome it too!" #UKEdChat
  163. @ukedchat I heard about teachers using the example of the girl from Grenfell tower who turned up to her GCSE in pyjamas, and it worried me #UKEdChat
  164. @ukedchat Because it would have been OK if she hadn't been able to make it to her GCSE after her home burnt down, too. #UKEdChat
  165. @ukedchat I'm a teacher with depression, anxiety, & trauma: I don't know how that translates into a resilience % score. #UKEdChat
  166. @chevalier_cygne Very wise words and critical that more think the same way as you. Brilliantly articulated throughout #UKEdChat this evening. Thank you 😇
  167. @ukedchat Totally agree @ukcreativeed also adapting 2 change embracing feedback & working interdependently are behaviours that time should be given 2
  168. Great to see #UKEdChat discussed teaching resilience in schools. Such a valuable discussion to have. Schools can make such a difference.  https://twitter.com/ukedchat/status/890663206552649728
  169. @ukedchat For some just bringing themselves to school each day when it would have been easier not to bother. #resilience #grit
