  2. @ukedchat A1. #UKEdChat Allowing everyone access to a fair and good education, no matter of their background and life challenges
  3. #ukedchat Inclusion means valuing everyone & ensuring sufficient flexibility to ensure that each child is able to maximise their strengths  https://twitter.com/UKEdSch/status/895721792505094144
  4. @UKEdSch A1: Allowing all Ss to actively participate in ALL activities no matter their background or issues they may experience. #ukedchat #edt5335
  5. Inclusion in Education means teaching individuals rather than groups, classes, year groups, curriculum based on age related norms #UKEdChat
  6. @ukedchat Making learning accessible to all young people and their parents/carers regardless of their circumstances or backgrounds #UKEdChat
  7. @SueRoffey Quite a task when you have so many different characters in front of you as a teacher? #UKEdChat
  8. @SueRoffey Yes Flexibility! Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses we just need to be flexible to help them achieve. #ukedchat #edt5335
  9. @CoultasRob Yes, and think it's always important to allow students to explore different cultures, and see how other people live etc.? #UKEdChat
  10. @ukedchat Yes, but this is our job as teachers. Careful planning and effective teaching should allow this to be achievable in most settings #UKEdChat
  11. @ukedchat No, not if external pressures: standardized results; data, league tables,Ofsted fail to recognise progress can take many forms #UKEdChat
  12. #UKEdChat - Q2.
What do you think are the main injustices in terms of inclusion in the current education system? https://t.co/Q5dcY9Ghuz
#UKEdChat - Q2. What do you think are the main injustices in terms of inclusion in the current education system? pic.twitter.com/Q5dcY9Ghuz
  13. @CoultasRob Totally agree, but it can be difficult if you have so many groups of children over a teaching week #UKEdChat e.g. secondary school teachers?
  14. @UKEdSch #ukedchat ensuring all learners are able to access curriculum regardless of any pre-determined label. All s's are = as important as each oth
  15. @ukedchat External pressures on standardized results and lack of 'can do' attitude #UKEdChat
  16. #ukedchat It is not easy but relationships are key - between pupils as well as teacher pupils so group work is more effective.
  17. @ukedchat A2 #UKEdChat Where you grow up. The social situation of where you grow up. Low expectations placed to students etc. Lack of opportunities.
  18. @ukedchat Yes, our system makes it so very difficult BUT not impossible, there are many excellent examples of success but not consistent #UKEdChat
  19. @UKEdSch A one size fits all model #ukedchat not all S's/humans will thrive through 1 expected model #ukedchat
  20. @ukedchat #UKEDCHAT Injustices include low expectations, lack of understanding of needs and how to address them in schools.
  21. @SusanSEnglish Agree, although the system doesn't appear to reflect that #UKEdChat :-(
  22. @ukedchat Working in collaboration within depts when planning/creating resources is essential 2 support differentiation and make achievable #UKEdChat
  23. inclusion of some pupils can be to the detriment of the rest of the class - inclusion of some pupils can also be to the benefit of the class  https://twitter.com/ukedchat/status/895724213079875584
  24. #UKEdChat poverty impacts on cortisol, learning & behaviour. Our most vulnerable children are most marginalised - and excluded even at 5
  25. @UKEdSch I am all for inclusion but I worry that the faster achieving Ss get ignored and the slower achieving get dragged along #ukedchat #edt5335
  26. @SusanSEnglish So, why do you think many policy developments are modelled to fit a certain type of pupil? What's going wrong? #UKEdChat
  27. @Tackela @ukedchat Yes, I try to hold high expectation for all but constantly feel like I am making exceptions, which I hate. #ukedchat #edt5335
  28. Agree, and many of these expectations surround students within their culture and society. How do we break this cycle? #UKEdChat  https://twitter.com/Tackela/status/895725206748225536
  29. @ukedchat #UKEDCHAT Injustices inc lack of appropriate courses in some sp schools as well as misuse of funding for school rather than child.
  30. #UKEdChat A1. - Giving every child the same opportunity to learn - no matter their ability, background or personal circumstances
  31. A1. #UKEdChat a prosocial culture that is accepting of all, challenging of all, protective of all + celebrates the fact.
  32. @UKEdSch A1 Inclusion = equal access to the curriculum and opportunities without discrimination or prejudice #UKEdChat
  33. @SueRoffey ...which is a shocking situation. #UKEdChat There are still opportunities to change things. Children need to know they are valued
  34. @ukedchat Confusion among parents about assessment processes & expectations of exam boards, etc = less direct engagement with schools #UKEdChat
  35. @UKEdSch A pre-disposition to value intellect over skilled/non-skilled employment. Diff to quantify, but need to value all in society #ukedchat
  36. @Cassass888 Inclusion should include faster achieving students. Inclusion means everyone. Everyone #UKEdChat
  37. #UKEdChat - Q3.
How do you ensure that your teaching is as inclusive as possible? https://t.co/aMVDNck3XI
#UKEdChat - Q3. How do you ensure that your teaching is as inclusive as possible? pic.twitter.com/aMVDNck3XI
  38. #ukedchat Teacher wellbeing also key - stressed teachers can be less effective, have lower empathy & not so open to learning.
  39. @ukedchat A3. Planning, and ensuring all work is accessible to all students, to the best of my abilities #UKEdChat
  40. @UKEdSch Yes it should but I feel like they get left behind (or ahead) in a lot of cases #ukedchat #edt5335
  41. @UKEdSch + suits the middle ground (most not all) historically some attempts to address & now - vocational route but looked down on often #ukedchat
  42. Absolutely - it is critical. Too much rapid medical labelling rather than looking at causes  https://twitter.com/ukedchat/status/895726270927040512
  43. @UKEdSch Find time to listen, really listen. Get to know students and how they work. Active observation at all times + open flexibility #UKEdChat
  44. Awareness of children's needs and expectations. Children will thrive off interaction and that is vital to promoting inclusion #UKEdChat  https://twitter.com/ukedchat/status/895726712968925185
  45. @ukedchat #ukedchat 1. Positive stories of SEND, educating parents/carers about child's need and LA systems, trainee teachers gain experience in SS.
  46. @UKEdSch A3: I make sure that all students are able to actively participate and that I plan for every "level" of students. #ukedchat #edt5335
  47. @UKEdSch A2 It's a challenge to balance the needs of 30 individual chn. Focus is often on chn with SEMH issues but that may benefit all #UKEdChat
  48. @ukedchat @UKEdSch Absolutely, inherent bias, society value systems & dare I say class as a concept too? #ukedchat a huge discussion re make-up of society
  49. A2. #UKEdChat it violates the rights of too many by demoralising + marginalising those who do not 'meet' 'age-related' specified milestones
  50. @ukedchat Planning, Good subject knowledge and most important - know the students you teach #UKEDChat
  51. @digicoled @ukedchat Planning is key and where I someday feel like I fall short, due to lack of time. #ukedchat #edt5335
  52. @ukedchat #ukedchat government should allow attainment 5 for SSEN/EHCP Learners and double weight 4 of the subjects they take.
  53. @Cassass888 @ukedchat Indeed. Time, time, time. That's what makes inclusion so difficult. #UKEdChat
  54. @nickotkdV @ukedchat A3 Agreed. Awareness of prior learning, planning carefully &ensuring all chn can access what you want to teach them. effective afl #UKEdChat
  55. @ukedchat #UKEDCHAT 2. We need more incentives for schools to be centres of excellence for SEND practice for e.g. more funding/school resources/etc
  56. #UKEdChat - Q4.
What aspects of inclusive education have been most pertinent throughout your teaching career? https://t.co/WQOjMdVl5z
#UKEdChat - Q4. What aspects of inclusive education have been most pertinent throughout your teaching career? pic.twitter.com/WQOjMdVl5z
  57. @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Support from external agencies can vary and difficult to access. Important others in sch are aware of individual needs in a class #UKEdChat
  58. #UKEdChat A3 - Ensure any planning/activities set approp. challenge for all Ps. Think about how each child would learn from the work
  59. @UKEdSch A3 make sure you've got lots of different activities & have differentiated outcomes #ukedchat
  60. @keran77 @UKEdSch And that they take this into account when looking at Data etc. #UKEDChat
  61. A3. #UKEdChat working tirelessly with feedback (formative assessment, questioning + attentive listening) + moving forward on that basis
  62. @ukedchat inclusion is of two prong to me. 1. Allowing every one in the process of learning. 2. Adopting every means and methods.
  63. @UKEdSch A4 Moving to a more growth mindset way of thinking has elevated my expectations of all chn while thinking of them as individuals . #UkEdChat
  64. @ukedchat #ukedchat Inc teaching isn't always about different/scaled down tasks. It can be aids that reduce anxiety so kids can focus on learning.
  65. @ukedchat #UKEdCHAT-A2 lack of funding for the support which many pupils need (e.g LSA's/equipment).
  66. @keran77 @UKEdSch I totally agree. Have high expectations of every child and expect them to achieve more than they believe they can. #ukedchat
  67. @nickotkdV @UKEdSch I'm fortunate. HT wants to know about progress in terms of learning behaviours + SEMH + what extra support is needed. #UKEdChat
  68. #ukedchat Enabling everyone to laugh and share humour does much to promote inclusive #belonging - it also builds wellbeing & #resilience.
  69. @ukedchat #ukedchat Recognising triggers for anxiety and addressing them is the greatest tool. So using checklists, social stories, pre reading...
  70. @keran77 @UKEdSch I am lucky my previous Head Teacher was like this. What progress has been made? How can we work together to improve this? #ukedchat
  71. @ukedchat A great skill that can be honed if so many other unnecessary distractions are abandoned
  72. #UKEdChat - Q5.
What steps do you think are necessary for education, as a whole, in truly ensuring an inclusive education? https://t.co/MVxBtJWLh7
#UKEdChat - Q5. What steps do you think are necessary for education, as a whole, in truly ensuring an inclusive education? pic.twitter.com/MVxBtJWLh7
  73. @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Exactly. Much better than saying what % are at ARE and how many are not. Progress evident when you look at books and talk to chn #UKEdChat
  74. @UKEdSch A4. Learning the value and relevance of CATS scores to tailor teaching learning to specific individual preferences and needs #UKEdChat
  75. @ukedchat #UKEdChat A2-teachers expected to achieve miracales without enough support/time- providing training isn't the answer, we need more time.
  76. @Cassass888 @ukedchat #ukedchat What could your school system do to help you to make sure that these expectations aren't compromised?
  77. @UKEdSch Knowing the needs of every child in your class and having high expectations of them. No limits. Growth mindset. #ukedchat
  78. @ukedchat Increasing opportunities for young people to gain valued qualifications for their skills, not simply their ability to sit exams #UKEdChat
  79. @ukedchat Q5. Value learning in all forms. Trust educators + stop interfering in the profession to make quick political gain. Let us teach. #UKEdChat
  80. @ukedchat #UKEdChat combating/removing social barriers regarding different cultures, backgrounds, SEND children. Equal opportunities is paramount
  81. @UKEdSch A5 ALL schools need to be inclusive. schools that don't manage this need support. Access to good external support for chn with SEN #UKEdChat
  82. @caroljallen @ukedchat This is so true. I hate when politicians get involved in something they know little about #ukedchat #edt5335
  83. @Tackela @ukedchat I think smaller class sizes would be the best place to START, not sure what would be best from there. #ukedchat #edt5335
  84. @ukedchat That there isn't sufficient effective support to include all in an ever increasing class size?
  85. @Cassass888 @ukedchat #ukedchat If systems are right, then expectations can be maintained through 1:1, small group support #SENCO in addition to lesson time.
  86. #ukedchat Actions rarely based on evidence but belief We need to build the belief that #education is for every #child to flourish in life.
  87. @ukedchat Q5. Shared discussion regarding the term & principles of inclusion. How often do we consider what this ubiquitous term means? #UKEdChat
  88. #UKEdChat - Q6.
How can we celebrate the lives of all members of school communities, no matter about the differences and challenges faced? https://t.co/EnKLIlBeuw
#UKEdChat - Q6. How can we celebrate the lives of all members of school communities, no matter about the differences and challenges faced? pic.twitter.com/EnKLIlBeuw
  89. @Cassass888 @ukedchat More effective TA Support? Pupil passports for insight into child? Homework or catch up clubs? Team approach for challenging children?
  90. @ukedchat I plan with hints for those struggling and more in depth for those who complete the more progressive questions. It never seems enough.
  91. How can we celebrate the lives of all members of school communities, no matter about the differences and challenges faced? #UKEdChat
  92. @ukedchat #ukedchat Priotise school placements/rejig attainment 8/better ITT on SEND/challenge low expectations & appropriate courses for learners
  93. @ukedchat A6 Celebrate achievements. Encourage sch community to recognise that we are all different but we share so much in common. #UKEdChat
  94. Thanks for an interesting hour. For those lurking, please keep trying, even with the most challenging students, they need you x #ukedchat
  95. @ukedchat By encouraging/promoting kindness, lets look after each other more.
  96. @UKEdSch #UKEdChat - A6 - Encourage an environment where pupils (and staff) are proud of their achievements and share them with peers regularly
  97. @UKEdSch #UKEDCHAT Differientated outcomes, extension tasks/helper resource for every activity. Scanning room is key to see who isn't coping
  98. @ukedchat Make sure lots of different things are celebrated. Recognise effort, kindness, humour, determination as well as academic stuff.
  99. @ukedchat Stop schools selecting pupils and refusing entry to those with SEN / SEMH through dark and devious means.
  100. @ukedchat One thing I did (not whole answer) was write Junior Plays so that every P7-S2 pupil who wanted to be in it had a part. #ukedchat
