  2. #UKEdChat - Q1
In terms of S. Media & young people, what evidence have you seen that the platforms are positive in terms of development? https://t.co/zh7gHJum3c
#UKEdChat - Q1 In terms of S. Media & young people, what evidence have you seen that the platforms are positive in terms of development? pic.twitter.com/zh7gHJum3c
  3. @ukedchat #UKEdChat A1. The social side of life is critical for our students, so seeing the connections made has been good to see.
  4. @digicoled @ukedchat A1 increased motivation and curiosity although I don't know of any evidence other than anecdotal etc #UKEdChat
  5. @UKEdSch #ukedchat No evidence to support development. Just a diff comunication forum. Not unlike us phoning friends on home phone straight from sch!
  6. @ukedchat @digicoled When engaging with inquiry based learning, it can enable pupils to communicate with other students from across the world #UKEdChat
  7. @KLMorgan_2 @digicoled This is a tough question, but suspect there will be more responses to the next one in #UKEdChat
  8. #UKEdChat - Q2
What behaviours / effects have you seen in terms of young people & social media, that have resulted in negative consequences? https://t.co/nUguTdH8n3
#UKEdChat - Q2 What behaviours / effects have you seen in terms of young people & social media, that have resulted in negative consequences? pic.twitter.com/nUguTdH8n3
  9. @KLMorgan_2 @digicoled @ukedchat Agree re only anecdotal. Would need a controlled study to seek evidence re positive developmental side. R snapchat selfies positive?
  10. @ukedchat #UKEdChat A2. This is simpler and more obvious to see, in terms of bullying, negative feelings of self, and trying to impress the crowd :-(
  11. @KLMorgan_2 @ukedchat @digicoled I agree although use within a primary school is sometimes difficult to see. #UKEDChat
  12. @UKEdSch #UKEDchat withdrawal from social situations. Inability to leave devices alone. Anger if challenged re phones etc. Non permitted pics taken
  13. @nickotkdV @ukedchat @digicoled However, Twitter can be used as a resource within the classroom using the school account etc. For example tweeting an author #UKEdChat
  14. @UKEdSch I had a student who didn't want to come on a trip as we were going to a place without wi-fi, which would affect snap chat ranking #ukedchat
  15. @KLMorgan_2 @nickotkdV @digicoled When did age restrictions make a difference? The age on SM networks is not enforceable by law & only guidance #UKEdChat Still need to guide?
  16. @UKEdSch Bullying. Like all platforms there are always those that fail to follow the rules. #UKEDChat
  17. @ukedchat #UKEDCHAT Students have used it to tease others that they consider less cool, resulting in exclusions and other sanctions.
  18. @SusanSEnglish Oh yes, familiar problems, and very difficult to reason with individuals #UKEdChat
  19. @digicoled @ukedchat 'Impress the crowd'-huge issue, as is comparison. The negative side is the mental harm it can do, which is often hidden #UKEdChat
  20. @UKEdSch Yes - an irrational reaction to reasonable request almost as if an addiction to the SM/device #ukedchat
  21. @ukedchat @nickotkdV @digicoled For example, firewall restrictions at schools I've worked at have prevented access to some social media platforms. #UKEdChat
  22. @SusanSEnglish Because I would be very rational if someone took my device 😱 #UKEdChat
  23. @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Yes have no phone policy in my sch this is such a relief, however have heard of major ipad related issues in others #ukedchat
  24. @KLMorgan_2 @nickotkdV @digicoled I think that is becoming less relevant as access to 4G+ is so common now #UKEdChat
  25. @ukedchat My use of Snapchat is viewed by 5k viewers daily and I use it to teach maths via video tutorials. #UKEdChat
  26. @ukedchat A1. When pupils are from all over the world, it is lovely for them to communicate throughout the holidays to keep friendships up. #UKEdChat
  27. @ukedchat #UKEDCHAT It's probably tough because the positives are limited. Students may view it more as a street cred tool than just a social one.
  28. #UKEdChat - Q3.
As educators, what key skills and considerations should we be teaching in terms of behaviour on social media platforms? https://t.co/c0vVVfONNt
#UKEdChat - Q3. As educators, what key skills and considerations should we be teaching in terms of behaviour on social media platforms? pic.twitter.com/c0vVVfONNt
  29. @UKEdSch Yes, I know if sanction is within known boundaries acceptable. I will put phone away to concentrate. We set parameters re meals #ukedchat
  30. @nickotkdV @KLMorgan_2 @ukedchat @digicoled Tweeting an author & getting a reply is thrilling for children. We do it on their behalf and print it.
  31. @mrgsnapmaths @ukedchat This is interesting. I used to do youtube vids, but stopped as sch got GCSEpod. Maybe snapchat is worth looking at as a tool? #ukedchat
  32. @ukedchat A2. Status of 'friend gathering' can lead Ss to add / friend people they don't know just to get likes. #UKedchat
  33. @EmmaValerio82 @nickotkdV @ukedchat @digicoled Yes, it makes them so much more accessible; it enables you to delve deeper into author intent etc. It's great for aspiration #UKEdChat
  34. @ukedchat Respect #UKEdChat A3. Knowing when to respond or ignore to SM postings. Possibly photo skills need to be taught! 😁
  35. @UKEdSch #UKEDchat q3 Most important. If you wouldn't say it in real life DO NOT say it or do anything behind a screen. Once typed opp to dwell on
  36. @UKEdSch If you wouldn't do it face-to-face, don't do it on social media #ukedchat
  37. @GeographyCarrie @MissDCox @UKEdSch When we moved into our new house my son wanted to stay with his nan until we had Internet setup. #ukedchat
  38. @digicoled @ukedchat Cliches, but: Don't say it on social media if you wouldn't in real life! If your gran wouldn't like that photo, don't post it! #UKEdChat
  39. @ukedchat Whatever you put out there stays out there! If you wouldn't say it to their face... #ukedchat
  40. @UKEdSch #UKEDchat on SM tone matters & should be considered. Teach students examples oc similar msg but with different tones
  41. @garyhenderson18 @MissDCox @UKEdSch Oh no... it worries me, young people are becoming prisoners of SM and can't/won't turn it off for even short periods of time #ukedchat
  42. @ukedchat A3 - safety in terms of not unintentionally giving out personal info. This can be as innocent as an address in a photo etc #UKEdChat
  43. A3. Also, consideration that SM posts made NOW could be viewed by potential employers in the future #UKEdChat 😱
  44. @GeographyCarrie @UKEdSch Snap Carrie we said exactly the same point. You were far more succinct though 😀 #ukedchat
  45. @UKEdSch Safeguarding concerns through grooming. Huge issue that seems to be a persistent threat and more common than you may expect #UKEdChat
  46. @MrGPrimary @ukedchat Learn to write but not send-drafts are your friend-never SM when angry...
  47. #UKEdChat - Question 4.
How can schools support and educate parents and carers about the opportunities and risks involved with social media? https://t.co/66VcOoCe7X
#UKEdChat - Question 4. How can schools support and educate parents and carers about the opportunities and risks involved with social media? pic.twitter.com/66VcOoCe7X
  48. @MrGPrimary @ukedchat Children struggle with this as they see the delete button and believe that real does erase it completely. #UKEDChat
  49. @garyhenderson18 @MissDCox @UKEdSch I know... I was just thinking that as I sent that tweet... terrible! Not being a good role model tonight #ukedchat
  50. @ukedchat #ukedchat Blogs/newsletters - communicating is the key regardless of forum for this. Offering access to assemblies for parents too
  51. @ukedchat A4. I think persistently offering evening information session for parents, especially when their children are 7+ #UKEdChat To help inform
  52. @UKEdSch The main one is of overstating, keeping yourself safe online and being able to spot signs of others being inappropriate #ukedchat
  53. @UKEdSch Invite parents to come into school during lessons so they can see the tech in use #UKEDChat
  54. @SusanSEnglish @nickotkdV @UKEdSch I understand why but the potential as a learning tool means I feel its a shame or missed op where it has had to be banned. #ukedchat
  55. @UKEdSch Definitely share policy with parents and carers as well as including them in the creation of those policies. Hold open afternoons #ukedchat
  56. @digicoled @ukedchat Ask the children to design a esafety leaflet then photocopy it and let them take it home. #UKEDChat
  57. @garyhenderson18 @MissDCox @UKEdSch Couldn't agree more. I just took a 3 week twitter break and its been great but for many young people that would be unimaginable #ukedchat
  58. @ukedchat A4 presentation at parents evenings good especially for parents with literacy needs as letters go unread
  59. @ukedchat Resilience, respect, actually a lot of the traits that we want to develop in prep for be part of society in general #ukedchat
  60. @garyhenderson18 @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Negatives imo far outweigh pos & S's are v tech savvy without it being needlessly embedded & distracting from core learning #ukedchat
  61. @ukedchat Using school accounts to share advice from people like @DigitalSisters @waynedenner and others. Taking part in @UK_SIC day. #UKEdChat
  62. #UKEdChat - Question 5.
What resources/activities are available to help inform students about using and engaging on social media platforms? https://t.co/2TzgGhLQBk
#UKEdChat - Question 5. What resources/activities are available to help inform students about using and engaging on social media platforms? pic.twitter.com/2TzgGhLQBk
  63. @SusanSEnglish @nickotkdV @UKEdSch They also will have them in workplace and will have to manage distraction at that point. Why not prep them for this. #ukedchat
  64. @ukedchat Parent meetings, assemblies, e-safety days, letters/info home, e-safety report button on the website... #ukedchat
  65. @ukedchat A4. Offering workshops to support parents to be vigilant & equipped to manage social media usage at home & watch for risk signs #UKEdChat
  66. @waynedenner Yes, but a few ideas shared on here would be great, to stimulate the discussion ;0) #UKEdChat
  67. @CoultasRob I like the sound of 'Workshops' more than 'presentations', as they sound a lot less formal #UKEdChat
  68. @garyhenderson18 @nickotkdV @UKEdSch To a point. They are often far better than adults at being up to date using apps etc. Often thet teach us! #ukedchat
  69. @ukedchat A4 Getting both Parents and Children involved in the #eSafety learing is a great way perhaps running a joint assembly #UKEdChat
  70. @SusanSEnglish @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Very good point. It's about exploring with Ss but also knowing when tech isn't appropriate for learning. #ukedchat
  71. @ukedchat They are also more engaging and can prove very effective, particularly for parents/carers with limited social media experience #UKEdChat
  72. @ukedchat A4 Using Facebook for me has proved very useful when keeping Parents updated video content works better than written articles #UKEdChat
  73. @garyhenderson18 @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Agreed but within relevant subjects they can do this. Don't use SM at work unless work related & in lots of occupations no need #ukedchat
  74. @ukedchat A4 Parents evenings which have a actual practical focus on how privacy settings work, demo of apps and how screen management tools work
  75. @garyhenderson18 @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Agreed Gary. Tech v relevant, but should be approached with caution I think. Till exams utilise tech fully we must use discretion #ukedchat
  76. @SusanSEnglish @nickotkdV @UKEdSch But even if work where they don't need to use it they will still have it with them even if only for personal purposes. #ukedchat
  77. #UKEdChat - Q6.
From what you have witnessed, what are the most common & popular SM platforms currently being used by young people? https://t.co/Kdglsz47RW
#UKEdChat - Q6. From what you have witnessed, what are the most common & popular SM platforms currently being used by young people? pic.twitter.com/Kdglsz47RW
  78. @SusanSEnglish @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Totally agree with need for discretion or teacher professional judgement. Use where it has an impact #ukedchat
  79. @ukedchat Usually made in house for assemblies. But @UK_SIC and others make resources and design activities for schools. #UKEdChat
  80. @UKEdSch Learning to be Ready, Respectful and Safe no matter who they are communicating with. The comment or pic lasts forever #UKEdChat @PivotalEd
  81. @ukedchat Lots of children talk about Facebook and networks in which they can talk. #UKEDChat
  82. @ukedchat A6. Snapchat is currently the most common form, particularly for bullying issues #UKEdChat
  83. @garyhenderson18 @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Often not on person & self control is also parental resp, more than school I think. #ukedchat rules throughout life re acceptable use
  84. @ukedchat I believe most platform are useful to the younger generation. Our task as educators is too teach them how to use it effectively. #UKEDChat
  85. @garyhenderson18 @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Or, adherance to sch policy. Been in phone allowed sch & the disruption was unacceptable, so have exp both sides of the coin #ukedchat
  86. @KLMorgan_2 @ukedchat Also applies as regards teachers and pupils. Often surprised what is shared on here. As a parent I think, Did I sign up for this, exactly
  87. @garyhenderson18 @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Plus, personal view from anecdotes of IPad school means I am very cautious of perceived benefits vs the impact on learning #ukedchat
  88. @DiLeed @ukedchat Very good point, Di. Unless your account is private, information on Twitter is readily available for any eyes.
  89. It's 9pm - Many thanks for the contributions & chat in the #UKEdChat session this evening.

  90. @KLMorgan_2 @ukedchat I signed a social media agreement YEARS ago. Certainly before school trip twitter photos
  91. @SusanSEnglish @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Have also seen both sides. Have seen disruption managed well as non tech disruptions are. It isn't right for all. #ukedchat
  92. @SusanSEnglish @nickotkdV @UKEdSch It's a tech world. Who better than to teachers for Ss to explore and learn about it from. Research, collaborate, create, etc #ukedchat
  93. @DiLeed @ukedchat We have a similar thing at my school. It's definitely something that needs constant updating, reminding and educating.
  94. @DiLeed @KLMorgan_2 @ukedchat I often think this is strange. Do they have permission for all these photographs. #UKEDChat
  95. @garyhenderson18 @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Agreed it can be managed well & depends on sch ethos to a large extent. Prefer not but respect oth views. TY for the debate Gary #ukedchat
  96. @SusanSEnglish @nickotkdV @UKEdSch And thank you too. Was very nice to discuss. Have a good evening and look forward to discussing and sharing with you in future #ukedchat
  97. @garyhenderson18 @nickotkdV @UKEdSch Me too. Have a great evening from a self confessed tech scaredy cat (who will step out of her comfort zone now & again) 😉 #ukedchat
  98. @ukedchat Teach them how to keep their cool when they see something they don't like and either respond to it reasonably or not at all/
